Michael Bernal Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 31, 2024.
Michael "Mike" Bernal, 84, of Salem, Oregon, passed away peacefully at home on September 6, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born in Douglas, Arizona, and spent most of his life in Tucson, Arizona. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer just two months before his passing, yet faced this brief battle with remarkable strength.

Born and raised in Douglas, Arizona, Mike grew up alongside his five brothers in a close-knit family. After high school, he served in the Navy, stationed in Guam, where he developed a deep sense of duty and resilience. Upon returning home, Mike pursued higher education and graduated with a master's degree in education from the University of Arizona.

Mike began his career as a classroom teacher, where his passion for education shone brightly. He later joined the Arizona Education Association, a move that marked the beginning of a distinguished career. Known for his leadership and dedication, he quickly became a respected figure in the field, admired by colleagues for his commitment and warmth.

A gentle soul with a kind heart, Mike was a loving and generous man, dedicated to providing for and protecting those he loved. He was known for his integrity and treated everyone with fairness and respect. Beyond his professional life, he enjoyed outdoor pursuits, especially hunting trips with friends and sunny days on the Arizona golf courses.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Melinda Bernal, and his children, Xina Johnsen, Miguel Bernal, Annie Gonzales, and Laura Burmood. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Matthew Amy, Aidan and Marley Burmood, and Giovanna Bernal, and his great-grandchildren, Riley and Michael Hartig-Amy. His five brothers, Roberto (Bob), Guillermo (Billy), Felipe, Arturo (Art), and Rodolfo (Rudy), along with their spouses, and many nieces, and nephews, all who mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felipe (Chon) and Trinidad (Trini) Bernal, and his son, Oscar Bernal.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held on November 2, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tesoro Latin Kitchen & Cantina, located at 4420 N Oracle Rd, Tucson, AZ 85705. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring his memory, and they ask that you please share the details of this event with anyone who knew him and might like to take part in this memorial event.

I really enjoyed our hunting trips. We teased each other and had a lot of laughs. I will truly miss his companionship and the great times we had.
