Michael F. Bowers

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mike Bowers. Mike was born in Northampton, England in 1940, to Loftus and Audrey Bowers. His family came to Canada in 1947 and settled on a small farm in Outram. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Hylda (Elliott); sons, Paul (Lucy) Winnipeg MB, Daniel, Terrace BC, Alden, Aldershot England, and Neal (Jennifer), Ottawa ON; sisters, Kaye Walker Berwick, Janet Bowers (Julie) Liverpool; brothers, Peter (Madelyn) New Germany, Christopher (Judy) Sable River; grandsons, Lewis, Francis, and Waylon. He was predeceased by his first wife Doreen (Messervey), and sister Anne Otto. Over the years, Mike worked for Fundy Gypsum Co, Hostess Foods, and owned and operated Mike's Deli and Coffee Shop for 12 years. After which, he worked for Kent Building Supply until his retirement in 2007. He served on the Board of Directors for the Victory Credit Union for 10 years, ran the Monday night jam session at the Avondale Hall for 6 years, and in his later years volunteered as a driver for West Hants Dial-A-Ride. Mike enjoyed driving, working in the woods and gardening. He was a strong personality with a sharp mind for finance and all things political. Mike believed in hard work, doing your share, and being dependable. He had a great love for animals, in particular his dog Alfie. Described by his friends as a "straight shooter", he was outspoken and never at a loss for words. Mike will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the nurses and doctors of the palliative care unit at the Hants Community Hospital, for the care and compassion they showed Mike in his final days. A celebration of life will be held at the Brooklyn Fire Hall on Sunday, May 7 from 2 to 6pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local food bank.
