Michael Cone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 30, 2023.
Michael Kenyon Cone died in his sleep at his home on June 21, 2023, in El Paso, Texas at the age of 51.

Michael is survived by his parents, Steve Cone and Ann Foster Cone of El Paso, Texas; daughter, Mackenzie Cone, of Ohio; brother, Darren, wife Berna, twins Sydney and Elliot Cone of El Paso, Texas; and sister, Shelley Delich and children Gage, Bella, Lilah, Oliver, and Quintin of Loveland, Colorado. Michael is preceded in death by his grandparents Irvin and Nancy Cone of El Paso, Texas, and John and Velma Foster of El Paso, Texas.

Michael was born on October 29th, 1971, in El Paso to Steve and Ann Cone. He worked at the University of Phoenix from 1996 until 2001 when his only child, Mackenzie Rose was born in November. Mackenzie immediately became his world and Michael became a stay-at-home dad. Nothing was more important to him than Mackenzie's happiness and success. There has never been a father that has been more proud of his daughter than Michael was of Mackenzie, the light and love of his life. Together they enjoyed movies, going to eat Italian food, and Legos along with many other activities. Michael was one of the most sensitive, loving, kind-hearted people you could ever meet. Some people credit him for offering them the opportunity to change their lives and know that without him they would not be here today. Michael was an essential worker throughout the Covid Pandemic upon his return to his hometown of El Paso, Texas from Cleveland, Ohio. He selflessly worked with immuno-compromised populations in the Legacy Nursing Home. It was during this time that Michael began working at Da Vinci schools in multiple capacities from nursing to security. Upon the news of his passing, several of his coworkers reached out to let his family know how loved Michael was by many. One co-worker stated that Michael was a wonderful person with a huge heart and a kind and generous soul. Michael was always there to listen and be a shoulder to cry on; however he could also light a fire under someone to get them back on track if they found themselves lost. For some, he had a knack of finding the kindest way to tell someone they need to pick themselves up and keep going, even on their darkest day.

Michael was accomplished at writing fan fiction, and often was the go-to person on any trivia related to Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica along with many other science fiction books and shows. His dedication to his daughter, quirky sense of humor, friendship, and reliability will be deeply missed.

A visitation is scheduled for Saturday July 8th, at Hillcrest Funeral Home on Doniphan at 10:00 a.m. followed by a eulogy at 11:00 a.m. The Rob Pendleton family will lead the eulogy and provide the music. A luncheon will be provided following the eulogy (location to be announced at the funeral home). All are welcome to attend and celebrate Michael's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Velma P. Foster Fund for Teacher Education at the El Paso Community Foundation at PO Box 272, El Paso, Texas, 79943-0272.

The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support.

My most fond memories of Michael are of when he was 5-6 years old and would come visit me to help me study. I lived in the garage apartment behind Mrs. Cone´s home while in medical school. It was always a pleasure when he would come up the stairs and announce "Hi Bylsma, I´m here to help you study." His smile and good spirits were always welcome and did help me in many ways. Gods speed on your journey Michael.
