Michael DeVoll Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 17, 2023.
Michael Gordon DeVoll passed away on April 6, 2023 after a valiant fight against cancer. A beloved son, brother, uncle, godfather, husband, brother-in-law, friend and mentor, he leaves many memories to be cherished.

He was born on August 29, 1963 in Port Arthur, Texas to James and Judy DeVoll. Michael's childhood would take him to small Texas towns such as Spicewood and Groves, where his family life was filled with laughter and celebrations.

His multi-faceted life fostered a diverse legion of friends and colleagues. Photography was the first profession to channel his creative streak. His gift of relating to all people, especially the young, led to his role as an exceptional educator. He listened to his heart, helping young adults deal with psychological concerns and took the next step, becoming a licensed professional counselor-supervisor (LPC-S). In 2006, DeVoll Counseling was created, and he would later direct The Wellness Collective, furthering his mentoring and collaborative efforts in mental health. His involvement with the Texas Counseling Association quickly led to leadership roles, including President. His dedication resulted in numerous awards.

Michael's faith remained a bedrock of his life. An active member of Christ Church Cathedral, he loved singing in the choir and participating in many committees. His faith was comforting to all.

Education remained a passion for Michael. Since 2013, he served on the board for the Gee Family Association Education Fund along with his husband, Gary. Michael soon became the chair of the scholarship selection committee.

His friends and family remember his love of Batman, movies (especially scary ones), Gary and his family and Michael's kindness, loyalty, determination and fairness.

He is preceded in death by his father, James Stancel DeVoll, brother, James Craig DeVoll, grandparents Robert and Ola Craig, and George and Ida DeVoll. He is survived by his husband, Gary Gee, his mother, Judy DeVoll, sister, Michelle Files (Leonard), brother, Kelly DeVoll (Tia), sisters-in-law, Molly Gee (Jeffrey Yip) and Mildred Bergman, brother-in-law, Stephen Gee (Susie), numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Michael will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 2:30 pm at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue, Houston, TX, with reception following in Reynolds Hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in honor of Michael may be made to the Texas Counseling Association Educational Endowment Fund - https://mms.txca.org/members/wish/donation.php?orgcode=TXCA&wid=729213 (Membership not required; to donate by check, send to TCA, 1210 San Antonio, Suite 200, Austin, TX 78701, ATTN: EEF. Michael came into my life at a time when I felt nothing could quell the sadness in my heart and the terror in my brain. He was a constant and continued to help me learn more about myself and what it meant to love myself even after I was no longer in the same city. I found out about his loss today as I was recounting his love of movie nachos to a friend. Michael, I´m never ever going to forget your kindness and your wisdom and your light.

I'm so sad about Michael's passing. He was a bright light and spark of joy. He will be missed by so many who loved him. I was honored to meet him as a co-worker in the early 1990s and to become his friend. Deepest condolences to his husband Gary, the DeVoll and Gee families, and all of his friends and colleagues.
