Michael Horwat

Mr. Michael Joseph "Mike" Horwat, Jr., age 92, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, in Port St. Lucie, Florida. A man of deep intellect and wide-ranging interests, Mike lived a long and meaningful life enriched by family, learning, music, and service.

Born on June 8, 1933, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Mike was the son of Michael J. Horwat, Sr. and Mary (Marinchak) Horwat. He received his early education at St. Vincent parochial school and continued his studies at St. Vincent Seminary and Duquesne University. His academic path reflected his lifelong love of knowledge and language.

Mike proudly served in the United States Army, demonstrating a commitment to his country that paralleled his dedication to personal growth and intellectual pursuits. A self-described linguist, he spoke many languages fluently-an extraordinary testament to his curiosity and discipline.

Throughout his life, Mike was an avid reader with a keen interest in history, politics, literature, and the cultural heritage of his family. His passion for learning was matched by a deep appreciation for music. He began playing the ukulele as a young adult and later became an accomplished mandolin player. Often accompanying himself with song, he especially enjoyed performing folk music from Hungary, Poland, and Russia-melodies that echoed the roots of his ancestry.

Mike shared 69 devoted years of marriage with his beloved wife Audrey (Shurie) Horwat. Together they built a loving family that includes their daughters Lorraine Powers (husband Larry Powers) and Joan Horwat (husband Johathan Googel), grandchildren Kate Powers (husband Jake DeWispelaere) and Mike Powers, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his sister Bernadette "Bunny" Giffin (husband Donald "Doc" Giffin) and brother Richard Horwat. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Irene (Horwat) Dunn; brothers John Horwat and James Horwat.

Mike's legacy lives on through the music he played, the languages he spoke so fluently, the books he read with passion, and most importantly through the love he gave to those around him. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
