Michael Livingston Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jul. 31 to Aug. 2, 2014.
Dr. Michael Claude Philip Livingston May 9, 1928 - July 25, 2014 Born on May 9th, 1928 to Sir Philip and Lady Livingston, Michael grew up in London just before and during WWII. Witnessing his father's career as an eye doctor in the RAF, he followed his footsteps into medicine. Michael was educated at Cambridge University, St. Thomas' Hospital and University of Alberta. He practiced medicine for 40+ years, caring for the Richmond Community with privileges at the Richmond General Hospital. As a family doctor he cared deeply about the patient, their story and was often generous with his time. He had many articles published in various medical journals and wrote 3 books: "Family Medicine an Inside Look", "Back Aid" and "Listening in Medicine." His passion for life extended beyond medicine to his family, sports and nature. He loved fly-fishing, dogs, hunting ducks and grouse, racquet sports, skiing, music, reading and of course, cricket. A strong batsman and leg-spin bowler, cricket had a special place in Michael's heart. He quietly led by example and was an amazing father to John, Peter and Timothy and a devoted husband to his wife of 57 years, Diana who passed away earlier this year. He is survived by his sons, John and Peter, and 5 grandchildren, Philip, Michael, Kaylyn, William and Sophie. We remember Michael as a loving, caring, thoughtful person who made a difference in many of the lives he touched. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Mary's Kerrisdale Church (2490 W. 37th Ave. at Larch St.) on Saturday, August 9th, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.

Dr. Livingston was almost like a valued member of our family. My husbands family had him for their family DR. from the time he was 10 years old. He had his little office at #4 and Steveston Hywy. I started at age 18 as an emergency patient, and the rest is history. He cared for our family delivered our 2 sons. He moved to Westminster Hywy and Gilbert Rd. He came to our home many times, when we were to sick to go to him , even when we lived out in the boonies in East Richmond We loved him dearly, he always spoke with pride of his 3 sons and his wife's love of flowers. I still have the hand written note that was sent out when he retired. When we received the letter I went into say good-bye in person and we both had a good cry as we had been patients for so long.
He was a wonderful Dr. and a BEAUTIFUL man with a very LARGE HEART.
The world will be a little smaller without him. Our hearts go out to all his children and their families

My heart goes out to you, Livingston family. Your father was such a big part of my family. He brought both my brothers into this world over 50 years ago, he watched over all of us when we were growing up and he guided us all, so beautifully, through the loss of our mother to cancer almost 30 years ago. He was a delightful character with endless passion for caring and he will be missed by all the people who's lives he touched.

Dr Livingston was one of those magical people you meet on your life, if you are lucky, that always made everything OK. He was our family doctor our whole youth out of his teeny little office beside the barber at the corner of No. 4 Road and Steveston Highway in Richmond and put more stitches onto my head when I was a kid than my mom would have ever wished for. He was a big part of our family and I hope his 'real' family takes comfort in knowing a little bit of his goodness will live with our family forever. He was a great man.

Dr. Livingston was our family doctor growing up in Richmond. He gave birth to myself and my brother and I was actually named Michael after him.
Even after moving on from British Columbia with my career as a Reuters photographer I would visit his office and to this day I still do my back exercises everyday exactly the way he showed me. We were very lucky to have had him take care of us growing up. He was indeed a great man. mb
