Michael Mulholand Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2025.
Michael William Mulholand, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home in Oakland at the age of 81 after a long battle with progressive supranuclear palsy.

Born on August 3, 1943, at Providence Hospital in Oakland, California, Michael was the son of Margaret Claire Hopkins and William Wallace Mulholand. He was a proud lifelong Oaklander, attending Saint Leo the Great Catholic School and graduating from Oakland Technical High School.

Michael served with honor in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964. He completed boot camp at Fort Ord, California, and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and Stuttgart, Germany. His final assignment was at the commissary at the Presidio in San Francisco. In 1963, during his military service, he married Diana Jeanne Lamoure, who is the mother of his two children, Michele Colleen and Daniel William.

A second-generation nursery owner, Michael and his father opened Mulholand Hill Nursery in Moraga in 1978, formerly King Nursery. His passion for gardening and plants continued to bloom as an entrepreneur. He acquired Broadway Terrace Nursery, and in 1985, he took ownership of Thornhill Nursery in Montclair, which he operated with pride for 25 years.

Michael's zest for life extended beyond his work-he was a voracious reader, art lover, and collector. He traveled extensively and enjoyed exploring new cultures, cars, fishing, hunting, and camping. His love of jazz music and the natural world were lifelong passions, and his greatest joy was time spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Sukanya Thiankaew, his daughter, Michele [Robert] Sams (Mulholand), and his son, Daniel Mulholand. He was a devoted grandfather to Bryce Mulholand, Courtney [Evan] Connelly, Tyler Sams, and Marissa Mulholand.

He also leaves behind his siblings, Paul [Carmen] Mulholand, Julie Lake (Mulholand), Claire "Candy" [Francis] Kuntz (Mulholand), and Neal [Debbie] Mulholand, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Cemetery in Oakland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michael's memory to CurePSP at curepsp.org.

He will be remembered for his infectious humor, vibrant spirit, deep curiosity, and unwavering love.

"I would like to be remembered as a man who had a wonderful time living his life, and who had good friends, a fine family. I don't think I could ask for anything more than that, actually." - Frank Sinatra

Wow, I'm in shock. I met Mike and built a 65 Mustang Convertible for him 30 plus years ago. Great guy and always a pleasure to talk to. I'd visit him every once in awhile at his nursery, but as time goes you loose contact. Was just thinking about him today and looked him up. To my shock he passed away. Miss you buddy. David Lozano

I had the pleasure to meet Mike on a few occasions, and he was kind, but always had something witty and funny to say, making those around him more welcome and comfortable. He will certainly be missed, but a man with his legacy will be carried on in the people he touched most closely. Godspeed to Michele, Dan and the rest of the Mulholland family.

Dear Michael

We have known each other since Junior High and you and my husband Richard before that time. I am not sure about grammar school.

When we were at Westlake Junior High we won a bop dance contest. After Junior High we went on our own journey but in 1968 I met my husband Richard Nelson and who walks in the door but Michael.

Michael was a very close friend to Richard and going forward a family friend through our lives. We spent many times together and now since Richard past in 2001 Michael was always there for me.

God bless you Michael,

Carolyn

I´m so grateful for all of the memories with my grandpa - or as we called him, Paca. He was so full of life and adventure, and that has definitely rubbed off on his grandkids. Miss you and love you, Paca.
