Michael Myers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 22 to Sep. 25, 2021.
Michael Anthony Myers, devoted son of the late Bessie and Manuel Myers, breathed his last breath on this earth on August 31, 2021, as a result of injuries sustained in a car crash. We are comforted by the knowledge of his subsequent journey guided by the hand of the Lord. Michael was born on November 26, 1954, in New Orleans to Bessie and Manuel Myers, who raised him in a Christian and loving home. As a young boy, he attended St. John of Arc Elementary and Middle Schools. He attended Booker T. Washington for his freshman year. He graduated from St. Augustine High School where he played snare drums in the nationally renowned Marching 100 band. Michael matriculated to Loyola University and graduated with a B.A. in Criminal Justice. His love for public service led him to pursue a career in the police force. He graduated from the Police Academy and served on the New Orleans Police Department where he became a beloved training officer to police recruits. He transitioned from the police department to a second career in hotel security administration. He served 30 years in hotel security at various New Orleans hotels before retirement, including the Westin Hotel, Monteleone Hotel, and the Marriott Hotel. Michael was a devout Christian from an early age when he was an altar boy at St. John of Arc Catholic Church. He was devoted to his church family at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church. He was a member of the usher board and could be found every Sunday at the 10:00 am mass serving his fellow parishioners. His devotion to Christ extended to his membership in the Knights of Peter Claver, St. Monica Council 59. Michael, or "Big Mike" as he was affectionately called by cousins and neighborhood friends, was truly a gentle giant beloved by all. He is survived by aunts, uncles, and a plethora of cousins and friends, including godchildren, Shannon Pierce-Lescale and Ryan Pierce. He will truly be missed by all. Visitation will be open to the public and held from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 25th at Duplain W. Rhodes Funeral Home located at 3933 Washington Avenue in New Orleans, LA. Masks will be required during visitation and attendees over the age of 12 years will need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Due to the pandemic, a private funeral (by invitation only) will be held at Rhodes Funeral Home beginning at 1:00 pm. Masks will be required and all guests over the age of 12 will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination. A private interment will be held at Mt. Olivet cemetery. Funeral services provided by Rhodes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of the Myers Family to the following churches: Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 4230 S. Broad St., New Orleans, LA 70125; Oak Grove AME Church, P.O. Box 375, Kentwood, LA 70444; 2nd Free Mission Baptist Church, 1228 Burdette St., New Orleans, LA 70118.

Salute to Mike and his loving Mother and Father ..and comfort unending to his family..I knew Mike back in the old school days ..during my law enforcement days in the 7O's and 80's when I worked for the city and later the state ..I was fortunate to meet and have a great conversation with him in 2014 during a election rally ..thought about Mike regularly during these past years since .. it's unbelievable that such a great guy was taken from us so tragically..Many blessings Mike to you and your parents and the entire family.. you'll never be forgotten..

I got to know Mike through Walt and Charlene Pierce. On those occasions when I got to see him, I found him to be a nice, quiet, gentleman and a gentle man. A gentle giant would be the best description for Big Mike. Rest in Peace, Mike.
