Michael Sandlin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 8, 2025.
Michael Wayne Sandlin, age 70, of Largo, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024.

Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Sherry Sandlin, and his loving children: Cindy Romano (Michael), Christopher Sandlin (Carolina), and Brian Sandlin (Stephanie). He also leaves behind two cherished stepchildren, Andrew Chappell and Shannon Chappell (Sean). Michael was a beloved "Papa" to seven grandchildren: Nathan, Libby, Lucas, Ozzie, Nicholas, Raelynn, and Maci. He will be deeply missed by many friends and family members, including his dear nephew Joseph Sandlin and niece Misty Sandlin and his former wife of 25 years, Debra Sandlin.

Born on July 4th at Fort Benning, Georgia-a fitting date for someone who would live with such strength and independence-Michael spent the early years of his life in Florida before moving to Michigan at the age of 10. He graduated from Hazel Park High School as part of the Class of 1973. Shortly after graduation, he married Debra Collins. Together they built a loving home for their three children.

Michael's professional life reflected his tireless work ethic and dedication to providing for those he loved. He worked at Valenite Modco in Oak Park for over 25 years, where he rose to the position of plant manager. Known as a fair boss and a hardworking leader, Michael balanced the demands of his career with an unwavering willingness to help others-whether it was lending a hand to neighbors or assisting strangers in need. In addition to his primary job responsibilities, he took on several side jobs over the years to ensure that his family had everything they needed.

Later in life, Michael pursued business ownership in the cutting tool industry-a testament to both his entrepreneurial spirit and determination. In 2001, he married Sherry Sandlin. Over the next two decades together as partners in life and work-and as co-parents-they shared countless memories while supporting one another through all of life's challenges.

Despite facing serious health issues later in life that led him to retire in 2015, Michael never complained about his circumstances. True to form, when asked how he was doing, he would simply reply that he was "fine." His resilience served as an inspiration to all who knew him.

Beyond work and family commitments, Michael had a generous heart that extended into charitable efforts such as food drives-an example of how much he cared about giving back to others. Including donating his corneas.

Michael's memory will be treasured by all who knew him. His legacy of hard work, kindness toward others, and devotion to family will continue to bring comfort and inspiration to those whose lives he touched.

May he rest in peace knowing how deeply loved he was by so many.

There will be a celebration of Mikes life Thursday, July 3 2025
