Michael Shinkevich Obituary

Michael J. "Mickey" Shinkevich, 63, Kewanee, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Kewanee Hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Kewanee. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Kewanee. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Monday at Rux Funeral Home, Kewanee. A rosary will be recited there at 8 p.m. Mr. Shinkevich was an activity director at Kewanee YMCA, worked in the IBM Department at Kewanee Boiler and taught at Atkinson High School until his retirement due to poor health in 1993. More recently, he was employed as a teacher’s aide at Belle Alexander Elementary School, Kewanee. He was a starter at Baker Park Golf Course and was a superintendent of Kewanee Park District Swimming Pools for many years. He had coached the Atkinson girl’s basketball team in 1983-84, leading them to the elite 8; coached football in Atkinson; and coached the Kewanee High School Riveters basketball team in 1988-89. He was known as "Mr. Stats" for work done for local schools. He was born Sept. 2, 1939, in Kewanee. He married Anita Duytschaver in 1962 in Kewanee. Memorials may be made to the church or Visitation School. Survivors include his wife, Anita; daughter, Tami Harker, Kewanee; son, Tim, Sacramento, Calif.; two grandchildren; mother, Midge Shinkevich, Kewanee; and brother, Jerome "Jerry," Kewanee.
