Michael Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 28, 2024.
Michael P Smith, 65, of Naples FL., formerly of Dobbs Ferry, NY passed away peacefully on March 15th surrounded by his loving family after a valiant battle with cancer. Michael is survived by his beloved fiancé Stephanie Karol, his daughter Bridget Fey(Troy), his grandson Carter, his brothers Brian (Kathleen), Robert Terence (Maria), his niece Christine Swor(Michael), his nephews Brian, Sean(Kelsey), Terry, his Grandniece Quinn, and Grandnephew Declan.

Michael was predeceased by his loving parents Beatrice and Charles Smith, and his dear sister Lisa DeCazotte (Antoine). Lisa and Michael had a very special bond, and we take comfort in knowing that they are together now in Heaven. Michael will be missed by the entire Condon and Smith family, especially his cousins who loved him dearly, along with his many friends from New York, Los Angeles, and Florida.

Michael was born on May 30th , 1958, on Memorial Day in Dobbs Ferry, New York, the third of four children born to Charles M. Smith, Jr and Beatrice C. Smith. Michael spent most of his life in the river towns of Hastings and Dobbs Ferry, New York - places that were close to his heart. The family home was on Bellair Drive, Dobbs Ferry. Michael graduated from St. Matthew's Elementary School in Hastings and Iona Prep High School in New Rochelle, New York before heading to Los Angeles where he attended the University of Southern California and earned admission into the prestigious film school. Like his three siblings, Michael was inspired by his father Charles Smith's distinguished career as a pioneering broadcast executive and launched his own career working for ABC's 20/20 in its formative years and became one its youngest producers. Michael worked closely with major on- air talent including Geraldo Rivera and Barbara Walters on major high-profile stories and investigative pieces. Michael's lifelong passion for research and detail made him an exceptional producer, a skillset that he cultivated his entire life with additional production roles at King World productions, Greenwich Workshop, and others.

Michael loved the water and spent many happy summers enjoying the beaches of Long Island and in later years, warm and sunny Naples, FL. Michael was engaged and about to be married to his fiancé Stephanie who was his soulmate and inspiration in life. The last six years Michael spent with Stephanie in Naples, Florida was the happiest chapter in his life.

Mike had an engaging personality, touched scores of people, and cultivated countless friendships across the globe. Moreover, many of Michael's friends were lifelong friends that he treasured, always reaching out and never missing a birthday post or significant occasion. Michael loved to send the most detailed texts, sometimes four or five paragraphs long. To Michael, the beauty of life was in the small details.

Michael was a very sweet and kind person. Always a pleasure to see when he came to our office. He touched each of our lives in a different but positive way. Michael will truly be missed by so many. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Michael was one of the kindest people I have ever known; there was a glow about him that his shyness accentuated. When his sister, Lisa, one of my closest friends here in L.A.,died, Michael sent a number of us who so thoroughly mourned her, individual and lengthy letters telling each of us in turn what we had meant to her. For this and so many more kindnesses, I will miss him for the rest of my life.

I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the Smith family on the loss of Michael. Although I did not know him personally, I am certain he was an outstanding quality individual. I lament not having had the honor of calling him friend.
