Family-Placed Obituary


SOBAL, USAF Major (Ret.) Michael Age 87 of Fairborn, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday December 12, 2007 in the Miami Valley Hospital. He was born December 16, 1919 in McAdoo, Pennsylvania, the son of the late John and Mary (Bogin) Sobal. Michael served his country in the United States Air Force during World War II as a crew chief on a C-47, then in industrial security, retiring in 1960 at the rank of Major after over 21 years of service. He followed with employment and retirement from civil service with the Defense Investigative Service (DIS). Michael was a member of Community United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Louise in 2004; and two sisters, Mary Petruncio and Sophie Waterman. He is survived by daughter, Nancy Sobal of Kettering; son, Michael and his wife Beverly of Howey-in-the-Hills, FL; daughter, Kathleen and husband Steven Fowler of Deltona, FL; grandchildren, Michael John Sobal, Jr., Carissa Fowler, Laura Fowler, and Carrie Dauphinee, all of Florida; great - granddaughter, Shayley Dauphinee; brother, John Sobal of Mesa, AZ; as well as nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Monday December 17, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. in the Community United Methodist Church, 339 Meyer Ave. at Burkhardt, Rev. Robert Iddings officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service. Interment with full military honors will follow in the Dayton National Cemetery. A first generation American, Michael loved and served his country well. He was a true gentleman of quiet, strength, kindness, and dignity. Memorial contributions may be made to the Research and Education Foundation of the American Head and Neck Society, 11300 W. Olympic Blvd., Suite 600, Los Angeles, CA -or-Community United Methodist Church. Arrangements in care of Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, Fairborn.

Major Michael Sobal was in every respect a perfect gentleman, a kind person, a good husband and father, and an outstanding citizen who represented the best of American society. His departure has resulted in a significant loss to his family, friends, church, community and nation, and I will miss him.
