Milos Vujnovich Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 1, 2011.
Dr. Milos M. Vujnovich, age 87, died peacefully at home on October 31, 2011, 60 years to the day he first met his beloved wife of 58 years, Vera. He was born in Sucuraj, Croatia, immigrated to the United States at the age of 14, and was a resident of New Orleans and Metairie, Louisiana for many years. Dr. Vujnovich, also known as Mike, Uncle Mimi, and Dide, is survived by his wife Vera Perret Vujnovich, and their children Dr. Wendy Jamison, George Vujnovich, Sandra Lorenzo, and Janice Wolff. He was the father-in-law of Michael Jamison, Joseph Lorenzo and Keith Wolff, and the proud grandfather of Jessica Jamison Higgins, Michelle Jamison, Marissa and Madison Vujnovich, Joelle and Elizabeth Lorenzo, and Alexander, Evan and Sarah Wolff, and great-grandfather of Michael John Higgins, Jr. He is also survived by his sister Theodora "Tade" Jurisich, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Captain George and Ana Vujnovich, and siblings Ante, Peter, and Vilka Vujnovich Barisich.

During WW II as a Sergeant in the US Army Signal Corps, Psychological Warfare Branch, European Theater, Dr. Vujnovich was awarded 5 battle stars. He attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and earned a B.S. degree in education with a physics and mathematics major. He also earned a M.E. degree from LSU, a M.S. degree from Loyola University, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. He taught physics, mathematics and trades science for 24 years as a Professor at Delgado Community College in New Orleans, where he chaired the Science Department and retired as Dean of the Occupational Trades Division. In 1974, he was the Delgado Alumni Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year. In addition to the education of his children, perhaps his proudest accomplishment was the publishing of his book Yugoslavs in Louisiana, one of the many respected works he authored and published in American and Croatian journals on the history of Croatian immigration to the United States and Louisiana. He was a member of the United Slavonian Benevolent Association, n/k/a Croatian Benevolent Association, serving a term as President and also as Recording Secretary for 50 years. He also held offices in the Louisiana Oyster Dealers and Growers Association and the Yugoslav American Club, and was a member of the Louisiana Committee for a Free Croatia, Knights of Columbus, Gentilly and Marquette Councils, the Croatian American Society, the Slavonian Pleasure Club, the Croatian Fraternal Union, the American Physics Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. A man of great intellect, Dr. Vujnovich had a deep love for his wife and family, a thirst for knowledge, a keen sense of humor, and an abiding faith in God.

The family would like to thank the medical team at East Jefferson General Hospital and all those who cared for him for the past seven months. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Clement of Rome Church in Metairie on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at noon. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 4, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, and on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at St. Clement of Rome Church from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Dear Vujnovich Family,
I am sorry to hear of your loss, and I wish I could be there with you in person. I have fond memories of going swimming at Uncle Mimi's house, and when I was older, he would always ask me about school or about my "writing career." I feel blessed to have known him and to be part of this family. Please know that I am thinking about you all and will keep you in my prayers.

Dear Sandra and family, I know your Dad was ill for many months, but I still recall my Mother-in-Law, whom I loved dearly, dying of an illnes she had for many years. Even though I believe that death is the ultimate healing, I was devastated when she died, because all of the wonderful memories I had of her came flooding in and I grieved far more than I expected. God be with you and your family duing these sad times. You are in our prayers. Love, Mark and Anna

We are so sorry to hear of Uncle Mike's passing. I have only fond memories of him and remember so many great stories from family Christmas parties at his house, complete with an appearance by Santa Claus, to babysitting Wendy, George and Sandra (there was always ice cream in the fridge). I know he wil be missed by the entire family. My love to all.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Janice I am sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Vera your love, prayers and humble spirit comforted your husband until his life expired. It was formerly evident that Dr. Milos prayed in supplication with you, Janice, Sandra, Wendy, and George. I extend my deepest sympathy and will continue to pray for your family. The Bible shares "Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted" (Matthew 5:4). Love, Cheryl

Dear Vera and all your wonderful family, Clarence and I, God willing, will see you tomorrow night. You have been in my thoughts and prayers since your phone call. Since our days at SJA, I was aware of your strength and determination. Now, after all these many months, I have witnessed a unique, dedicated, loyal and faithful wife and children. The love that was shown Mike throughout this long ordeal is an example for us all to follow. May God bless all of you, bringing peace and serenity into your hearts knowing Mike, the epitome husband and father, is now at peace.

Dear Mrs. Vujnovich,
You taught me at St. Francis Cabrini in the early 1960s. You were the sweetest teacher I can remember. You always remembered me when my mom and I would run into you around Parkchester back at that time. In later years, you knew my husband when you were a realtor in New Orleans. We both have such fond memories of you and are truly saddened for your loss and the loss your family is enduring. Please know that there are those from long ago who are with you in thought and prayer today.
Sincerely,
Debi (Verdini) and John Kreeger
