Montserrat "Monty" Casademont-Gomez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2024.
Monty, as she was affectionately known to her family and friends, passed to eternal life on January 27, 2024. Monty was born in Las Villas, Santa Clara, Cuba on April 12, 1939 to Dr. Angel Casademont Ribas and Gertrudis Jimenez Casademont. She was predeceased by her sister, Angela Casademont, and her brother, Dr. A. Carlos Casademont. Monty married her love, Dr. Rafael E. Gomez, in Santa Clara shortly before moving to the US so Rafael could complete his medical residency. They were inseparable for 64 years and passed 10 days of each other.

Monty, a devout Catholic, moved to Jacksonville, FL with her husband, "Erre" ('R' in Spanish,) as she lovingly called him, in the early seventies after he completed his residency in Endocrinology and practiced alongside Monty as she managed the office. Both Rafael and Monty enjoyed a deep-rooted spiritual life as lifelong practicing Catholics. They were active members of their parish, Blessed Trinity, the Diocese of St. Augustine, the Cursillo Movement and many other Catholic organizations.

A well-educated lady, Monty held various educational degrees, both in Cuba and the US, was fluent in Spanish, English and French and Board Member of the local French Alliance. Her love of literature and culture was evident as they traveled the world, always immersing themselves in the local culture and sharing their experiences with family and friends. Monty was a musician at heart, played the guitar and led her church choir, especially on the Feast Day of the Cuban Patron Saint, 'La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre.'

Monty's heart was her biggest asset. Never a derogatory comment passed her lips as she saw the beauty within each person and helped many individuals overcome hardships with her compassionate embrace, love and support. Her radiant smile lit up a room and made everyone feel welcome and appreciated.

Monty is survived by her sisters-in-law, Leticia T. Casademont, Vilma Gomez and Consuelo Gomez; nephews and nieces, Dr. Angel R. Casademont (deceased,) Claudio Casademont, Andres Casademont (Miriam,) Leticia Casademont, Albert Gomez (Nicole,) Juan Jose Andreu (Mary,) Carmen Andreu Cruz, Jesus Alberto Perea and Ana Marie Perea; her grand nephews and nieces, Miriam Casademont Pratt (Chris,) Catherine Casademont Luna (Jonathan,) Isabella Casademont, Natalia Casademont Heffernan (Tom,) Jose Sosa, Lauren Casademont, Matthew Gomez, Christopher Gomez, Carolina Gomez, Hector Luis Cruz, Maximiliano Rafael Cruz, Michael Joseph Andreu and Nisi Rodriguez; and her great-grandnieces, Olivia and Victoria Pratt.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on February 16, 2024 at St. Joseph's Historical Catholic Church in Jacksonville, FL with internment by her husband's side, at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
