Myrna Solberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 28 to Mar. 15, 2007.
Myrna Solberg, 69, died Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at Israel Hospice House in Ames after a long fight with cancer. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday March 3 at United Church of Christ – Congregational, Ames. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 2 with family present from 5 -7 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home.

Myrna Joan Fries was born April 3, 1937, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, to Francis and Velma (Retland) Fries. She grew up on a farm with her parents, two brothers, and two sisters. She graduated from Algona High School in May of 1955. She was married to Wayne Wiese of Algona from May 1956 until March 1963. Of this union, two children were born, Daryl and Kim Wiese.

On June 18, 1964, she married Earl Solberg of Jewell, Iowa, who had a daughter, Kim Ann from a previous marriage. On Sept. 1, 1966, a son, Jeff, was born. The family lived in Jewell until April of 1977 when they moved to Ames.

Myrna worked as a sales person in retail in Algona and Jewell. In 1974 she began working for the Ames Community Schools as an elementary secretary at Crawford Elementary until retiring 18 years later in 1992. She particularly liked the association of the small school staff and parents and helping with elementary age children. She continued to enjoy her friendship with many Crawford staff members all her life.

Home was always very important to Myrna, making the home attractive, comfortable and welcoming. She enjoyed having family and friends into the home for meals and visits. Children and grandchildren were very important in her life and she enjoyed having them all in for holiday and birthday dinner celebrations.

Myrna is survived by her husband, Earl; son Daryl Wiese and wife Lisa and grandsons, Murphy and Alex of Iowa Falls, Iowa; daughter Kim Ann Solberg Reno and husband Randy and granddaughter, Randi-Kay and her husband Joe Rager of Riverview, Florida; daughter Kim Wiese Fraser, and husband, David and grandsons, Adam and Andrew of Huxley, Iowa; son Jeff Solberg and wife, Cami and granddaughters, Heather and Christi Berg of Ames, Iowa.

Also surviving are brothers Robert Fries and Dennis Fries of Minnesota and a sister, Virginia Rafdal of Ankeny, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Darlene.

Myrna Solberg symbolized all that I loved about Crawford School. Her smile, her kind, caring personality is what the students, teachers and parents needed. I could always count on her--she was a true professional. She will be remembered by many individuals who've grown up and moved away but have fond memories of their childhood and Crawford school.

Myrna helped complete our Crawford family. She made all Crawford children her children. Whenever I saw her over the years she always asked about our boys. She will be missed!

Myrna was a student in one of my computer classes, and even though that was only a brief interaction, I found her to be a very special woman. I was very shocked and sad to read of her passing; perhaps I should have known she was ill, but I didn't. I hope that Earl and her family will take comfort from the fact that she was thought of as being a special person, one whom we will fondly remember.

It was shocking and sad to learn of Myrna's passing. You and Myrna were great neighbors, even though we only lived next door for a few years. You and your families have my sympathy. JOE VOSS
