Nancy Dinsmore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 10 to May 15, 2016.
March 7, 1923 - May 8, 2016 Nancy Reynolds Dinsmore, long time West Coast Editor of Harper's Bazaar magazine, died peacefully at home in Los Angeles on May 8, 2016 at age 93. Nancy was born March 7, 1923 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Aubrey Marshall Reynolds and Laverna Davis Reynolds. She grew up in Los Angeles, graduating from University High School where she was elected Student Body President. She attended Iowa State College where she studied journalism and textile design and was selected for the executive training program at Carson, Pirie, Scott & Company in Chicago. She married Wayne Dinsmore, Jr. of Chicago, then a Lieutenant in the US Army, in 1943 and was widowed in 1976. She later married Arden Lapham Day in 1990 and was widowed again in 2005. Nancy's career began as an account executive at the Abbott Kimball advertising agency until she was hired by Hearst Corporation as the West Coast Editor of Harper's Bazaar in 1958. She held this position until 1992. Nancy was active in the Los Angeles community as a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Committee, the LA County Museum of Art Council, the Hollywood Bowl Patroness Committee, the Blue Ribbon 400 Committee for the Music Center, and as a board member of the UCLA Costume Council and Council of the Library Foundation. She was a member of the Fashion Group, the Hollywood Women's Press Club, the Bel Air Garden Club, Los Angeles Country Club and The Beach Club. She had a love of people, fashion, parties, travel and most of all, her family. She had an impeccable eye for beauty and great taste to complement it. She maintained her spunk and fierce independent spirit right through the end; they are what kept her going strong right up to a few weeks before she passed. Nancy is survived by her beloved only child, Laura Dinsmore Chester and son-in-law, George M. Chester, Jr of Delaplane, Virginia; three grandchildren, Daphne Reynolds Chester and husband Kevin E. Crowe, Jr., Alice Laura Merrill Chester and fiancé Joshua Gregg and William John George Chester; one great grandchild, Miller Reynolds Crowe. A private family service is planned.

Nancy was a terrific mentor and fine example of a modern career woman. She was creative and kind, giving generously of her time and knowledge to those of us in the next generation (then) of the fashion industry in Los Angeles. So many great memories of meetings and events with the elegant Nancy. She could light up a room! My condolences to her family.

May the God of all comfort be with the entire family. He can give us comfort regardless ofhow distressing our situation may be. His Word assures us: "He is near toallthose calling upon him, ... and their cry for help he will hear." (Ps. 145:18,19)
