Nancy Oberg Obituary

Visit the Legacy Remembers website to view the full obituary.
Nancy Jane Oberg passed away peacefully the afternoon of Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at her home in Astoria, Oregon. She was 84 years old. She was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as well as daughter, sister, and friend. As we all mourn the loss of her presence, we take comfort in knowing we will have the joy of being reunited again in heaven.

She was born May 23, 1941, in Portland, Oregon to Marvin and Florence Luton. She was raised by her parents in Portland, Oregon with her younger sister Janet and brother Gary. Nancy was editor of the school paper and taught dance lessons while attending Jefferson High School. Nancy attended Eastern Oregon College in La Grande where she met the love of her life, Delmar Oberg. They were married on August 26, 1961, at first Christian Church in Forest Grove, Oregon. They had three children: Susan, Karen, and Brian. Nancy worked many jobs in addition to being a full-time wife and mother. Those jobs included being a librarian for Lewis & Clark Grade School, working for the telephone company, a factory worker for Rainbow Creations, and a seafood worker for Pacific Coast Seafoods. She retired while working as a Librarian at Clatsop Community College. Delmar and Nancy have lived in Astoria for over 60 years. They are long time active members at Lewis & Clark Bible Church where she worked as church secretary for many years. Nancy shared her gift of music by singing in choirs, duets, and as a soloist. She would sing Alto for Delmar while he listened to Christian music on YouTube so he could hear the music in stereo. During retirement Nancy and Delmar have received enjoyment from gardening, family gatherings, and walks on the beach. She spent countless visits to Sunset and Peter Iredale beaches helping to spot razor clams for her husband Delmar and they would go to Haystack Rock to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

Nancy is remembered for her attention to detail. Her compassion for others and sending cards on special occasions. Her gift to make everyone feel included. Her love and compassion for animals. Her writing poetry. Her strong devotional life. Nancy and her friend Pam read the same devotional "Daily Light" morning and night for many years to connect as Sisters in Christ. She liked to putter. She preferred to wait on others rather than having them take care of her. Her life provided many examples of love and devotion for the next generations.

Nancy is survived by:

Her loving and devoted husband Delmar Oberg.

Her daughter Susan and husband Terry Kruger of West Linn, Oregon; their daughter Stephanie and husband Thomas Hollingworth with their children James and Emma of Tualatin, Oregon; and their son Brett and wife Keyona Kruger of Estacada, Oregon.

Her daughter Karen Porter of North Plains, Oregon.

Her son Brian and wife Ashley Oberg of Kennewick, Washington; their daughter Aurora and husband Keith Ropp of Roseburg, Oregon; their daughter Mylie and husband Cam Bedlington of Clinton, Washington; and their daughter Joni Oberg of Kennewick, Washington.

Her sister Janet and her husband Ron Vonsild of Yachats, Oregon and her children and grandchildren.

Her sister-in-law Deb Luton of Columbus, Montana and her children and grandchildren.

Nancy was preceded in death by her brother Gary Luton, her son-in-law Steve Porter, her grandson Simon Oberg, and her great-granddaughter Victoria Hollingsworth.

There will be a private graveside service at Crescent Grove Cemetery in Tigard, Oregon.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Gideons International in Nancy's name.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Lower Columbia Hospice for their compassionate care and support during her final days.

The family invites you to the Celebration of Life for Nancy to be held on Saturday July 19th at 1pm at Lewis & Clark Bible Church, 35082 Seppa Lane, Astoria, OR 97103. Potluck at the church immediately following the service.

Nancy has been a very special friend for 66 years since we met while working at the telephone company in Portland the summer of 1959. Our friendship continued after my husband and I moved to southern California in 1962. We've shared letters, cards for all special occasions, numerous emails, fun & serious long phone visits, and especially the occasional in person times with Nancy & Delmar when we traveled to Oregon. And all the family photos we shared! I have been so blessed by this friendship. Shirley Godwin

To Delmar and all of Nancy´s children,
Nancy made all the family gatherings with the Kruger side, a special time. She was wise and loving. It was a privilege to be a part of her family. I saw and admired her deep devotion to Christ, commitment to her loving children and husband and the joy she got from nurturing her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was dearly loved and I am going to forever miss her quiet presence and gentle smile. God bless...
