Nancy Spear Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2023.
Nancy Stewart Clarke was born November 21, 1924 in Mt. Vernon, NY. A resident of Fairfield, CT, she attended Middlebury College and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. On January 11, 1947, she married George (Dick) Richmond Fearing, III. Together, they owned and operated the Hearthside Inn in Craftsbury Common, Vermont followed by Tyrola Inn in Stowe, Vermont. In 1953, they bought Tyrola Farm in Stowe and raised top-quality, national champion Hampshire sheep. They continued this until 1961. Favorite memories were when family members came from Connecticut and Massachusetts in summer and winter to spend time on the farm. (One particular memory was Nancy driving a tractor pulling a long trailer with cousins piled on.) Nancy and Dick had three children: Nancy Whitney Fearing, George (Rick) Richmond Fearing, IV and Pamela Fearing. They were divorced in 1961. In 1963 , she married William Leslie Horton. He passed away in 1965 from cancer. Nancy married Richard (Dick) Burt Spear in 1967. Together, they had a long and happy life. They lived in Middlebury, Vermont before moving to Colorado. Both fond of sports, they hunted, camped and shot both skeet and trap. An accomplished markswoman, in 1968, Nancy was acknowledged as the first person to have ever been selected to both the Guns & Ammo trap and skeet teams in the same year. In 1969, she was selected as a member of the Sports Afield All American Trap Team. Nancy and Dick moved to Satellite Beach, Florida in 2013 where they spent their final years. Nancy was predeceased by her husband and stepdaughter Holly. She is survived by children Nancy (husband Francis), Rick, Pamela, niece Virginia and her husband Fred Sandor of Satellite Beach and nieces and nephews in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Oregon and Georgia and step grandsons Eric and Lance Nichols and their families.

Nancy became a dear friend and neighbor. She had a deep love for all of my poodles, especially Katiegirl and PomPom. Even though she was in her 90s, she attended fundraising events with me for Coastal Poodle Rescue. She loved my lamb burgers and my husband´s surprise desserts. She is truly missed.
