NANCY WATSON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 20 to Apr. 24, 2022.
Nancy Lee Watson, 67, died peacefully on April 18 at her home in Boston, surrounded by family. She had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2020.

Nancy was born on June 12, 1954 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to the late Laurence and Nancy (Rose) Watson. She graduated from Wellesley College and Boston College Law School.

Nancy was a senior partner at Ficksman & Conley (Boston) where she specialized in medical malpractice defense work. Her clients benefited from her fine legal mind and compassionate attention. She carried none of her ego into the courtroom, only her meticulous preparation and consummate skill. She was a highly respected member of the Bar, and was voted one of Boston's "super lawyers" by her peers multiple times.

The first of twenty-five cousins, Nancy was a charismatic presence within her large extended family, remembered as a "teller of riveting stories" and a "shining example of what we could be." Nancy was cherished by her three siblings, for whom she was a go-to confidante, cheerleader, and unfailingly supportive older sister.

Nancy made early and enduring commitments to sustainability (she co-founded a city-wide recycling center as a high school student) and feminism. She played basketball during her school years and brought this experience to coaching her daughters and their teammates in youth basketball leagues.

Effortlessly stylish, Nancy once dressed for a formal dinner party in a castoff silk bathrobe - no one was any the wiser. She was a lifelong reader of fiction, lover of folk music and word games, and had a great ear for foreign languages. She relished time spent on Cape Cod and cooking for family and friends. Even during the most challenging periods of her illness, Nancy's grace, humor, and determination remained undimmed.

Nancy is survived by her beloved daughters, Rose, of Florence, MA and Skylar, of Cambridge, MA; her siblings, Pam (Jocelyn), Bill (Melissa), and Mark (Colleen); her nieces and nephews, Caroline, Chris, Jenna, Jack, Maggie, David, and Tucker; and the father of their children, Stefan Krug, of Sausalito, CA.

Services will be private. Please consider a donation in Nancy's memory to the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

Nancy was a good neighbor- which you can see in her commitment to sustainability and building of community both personally and professionally... of course, I mean it in that sense. However, I mean it also in its traditional sense as well. The Watson family lived next door and so Nancy´s parents, brothers and sister were my first exposure to neighbors. I was very little when I met Nancy and while we always loved her and the whole Watson family it took me years (and lots of neighbors!!) to appreciate just how lucky we had been to live next to Nancy and her wonderful family.

Nancy was a great babysitter, a ringleader in the neighborhood fun and unfailing patient with and kind to the `little people´.

Pam, Billy and Mark - I am sorry for your loss. You and your families will be in my prayers.

To Nancy's family: I heard (belatedly) of Nancy's passing today. I want to extend my deepest sympathies. I knew Nancy professionally as adversaries. Not only was Nancy professional in the truest sense of the word, she was always pleasant, reasonable and cooperative - even though we were representing opposing parties. I am saddened that you lost a loved one and our profession lost an admirable colleague.

Nancy was a wonderful lawyer and an even better person. I enjoyed trying cases with her. We both knew there had to be a balance between our lives as lawyers and our lives as part of a family. She always achieved thavv TV balance. Good memories will remain.
