Somehow I had not heard of the passing of Mr. Smith. I was blessed to work with him in his later years at a local health care facility. While he was known for being such a tough leader, I saw the gentler and loving side in his later years. So positive and respectful to others. I always remember that when I would ask him how his lunch or dinner was that day, his response always was "Best I Ever Had." What an extraordinary humanitarian who will be, forever, missed by all who benefited from his years of unselfish service to his community. God loves Nate Smith.

Dr. Renee and Nate Jr. and Smith Family: Oh my goodness, Nate Smith is a LEGEND. For any of us who had relatives in the building and construction trades, Nate Smith was a miracle worker. Thank God for all the doors he opened and all of the families who had a good living because of the pioneer that he was. May God comfort your family and give you nothing but peace and blessings going forward. Much love...

mr. nate smith, words cannot express the feelings i have always had for this man...in 1972 i was working as a heavy equipment operator on interstate 79 near waynesburg,pa.at that time out of hundreds of workers there were only two black operators on the job, myself included.the other operator i only remember as rock.one hot summer day i turned and there was nate smith, way down there in waynesburg asking me how i was being treated and if everything was ok.I cannot begin to tell you how much that meant to me...you see i was only 18 at the time.Iv'e seen nate through the years and the first thing he would always ask me is are you working?and i would say yes and his eye's would always light up and sparkle, even after he aged and his eyes kind of turned gray he still had that same sparkle.i have been a card carrying member of the international union of operating engineers since 1992 and i often wonder what my life would be like today if nate smith had not come to my job way down there in wayneburg on that hot summer day 39 years ago...nate and his family will always be in my prayers.he was a man!thankyou nate...

When we call upon our ancestors' names, they stay with us. Thank you, Nate Smith, for your great work. It hurts to know that we've been in similar battles without knowing your history. We showed your film tonight, on the day of your wake. You know we didn't plan it that way but everything happens for a reason. We stand because you stood and we will carry on your legacy. Ashe! Ashe! Ashe! Rest in Peace, Nate Smith. ---Kimberly C. Ellis, Executive Director, Historic Hill Institute http://historichill.org

I was fortunate to learn Nate Smith's story while developing a school curriculum guide to accompany the documentary produced by the team at Robert Morris University. He was an important part of the civil rights movement in Pittsburgh and nationwide. His legacy cannot be forgotten as we continue to grow towards racial equality in Pittsburgh and the entire United States.

Nate Smith a man with integrity. He would open up doors and hundreds would walk through.

A man that took on tasks where others looked away. Yet, when the door opened they walked through.

A man with full vigorous, physical and mental strength, became known all over. Doors began to open for men and women, Operating Engineers Local #66. His strength gave us strength.

A man that fought for man kind and succeeded in that BATTLE!!!!

My condolence to the Smith Family,

Agnes Hill, Stoneboro PA

Dear Nate Smith,
I remember your marching through the streets of Pittsburgh when I was a little girl. Now that I am older, I have much appreciation for your getting Blacks into unions. The system has failed us again and you are not here to take up the torch. Maybe someone will who knows. There will never be another Nate Smith like you. I love you for what you did in the 19 60's and I appreciate all that you have done. You alone helped our people and you alone stand out as one of OUR HEROES. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID FOR OUR PEOPLE. MY HERO!

To the family of Nate Smith, It was a pleasure marching from freedom corner with Nate, back in the day of the civil rights movement. I can say honestly that Nate was a fighter, and a great motivational leader. So, I know he could say, "Let the work I've done, speak for me". His time spent on this earth, brought about change. God bless you all.
