Nathaniel Woodring Obituary

Published by PL-North from May 23 to May 26, 2016.
Nathaniel John (Nate) Woodring, age 23, was struck by a car near Middlefield, OH, where he had lived for a short time. Nate is survived by his parents, Bob and Jennie of Evanston, IL, brothers Andy (wife Danielle, son Luke) and Jake (Tara Amiri), grandparents Judy Woodring and John and Janet Webb, and aunts, uncles, and cousins. Nate was preceded in death by his grandfather, Bill Woodring. Nate was born in Evanston, IL and was a 2010 graduate of Evanston Township High School, where he played drums in the marching band and excelled in the jazz program. He graduated from the College of Music at Michigan State University in 2014 with a degree in jazz performance. Nate was passionate about music from an early age, and was a talented and dedicated musician. He was an accomplished drummer, taught himself to play the piano, and composed music. He was an Eagle Scout in Evanston's Troop 3, and a staff member and drummer at Camp Makajawan in Wisconsin. Nate knew as much about Star Trek as he did about jazz music and musicians, and he was a knowledgeable movie buff. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in memory of Nate to Hopewell, which helps young people with mental health struggles: Hopewell, 9637 State Route 534, Middlefield, OH 44062, www.hopewellcommunity.org. A funeral will take place Saturday, May 28 at 4:00 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 2120 Lincoln St. in Evanston, followed by a reception at the church.

I didn't know Nate personally, but I knew him through his father, who always spoke of him and his other boys. He was so proud. I worked with his father for many years. We always talked of our children. He is an awesome Dad. Nate was very lucky

To the Woodring family, I just found out about Nate. I am terribly sorry for your loss. Please take comfort in knowing you raised a great young man. I had the joy of coaching him his Freshman year in Football. He was quite a competitor. May he rest in peace.

Dear Bob and Jennie,
Your longtime, loyal friend, Jim, (my nephew) told me about Nate. Reading about him touched my heart, and I could see in him your own enthusiasm for life when you lived in San Diego. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
Sincerely,

Dear Woodring Family,

Nate was a very special friend to me. He came into my life in high school and we bonded over our love of music, having jammed many times. I had seen Nate infrequently over the last five years or so, but he was always on the short, short list of people to reconnect with whenever I returned to town on break from school.

So hard to find words to sum up such a special guy as Nate. He was a gentle, thoughtful, and passionate person destined for a great career as a musician. I'm humbled to have had him as a friend.

I offer my deepest condolences, and will always remember Nate for the special guy he was.

I only knew Nate a short while, while he was in Middlefield, Ohio we jammed a few times, and it was so great to meet a drummer that liked the Allman Bros music! I had sort of taken them off my playlist because no one I knew were familiar with their songs. With Nate I found a compatriot and will forever think of Nate behind the drums any time I hear their music. Nate was an amazing drummer/percussionist, a true joy to play with. I really miss his presence.

Dear Woodring Family, I was working at Hopewell the night you arrived. I work every weekend, so I saw & spoke with Nate on Saturdays & Sundays. He is a sweet, softspoken young man whose greatest concern was getting to Church service on Sunday morning. I believe Nate is safe now, & I pray for your Family , as you navigate the time in this world without him, until you see him again. In God,s Love, Karen Ciulla

Dear Woodring Family,

Nate was an incredible guy, and it was so jarring to hear of his passing. Having played percussion with Nate in marching band, orchestra, concert band, and percussion ensembles nearly every day of my four years in high school, I got to know Nate really well, and he was a great friend. I'll miss Nate's sense of humor, his compassion, his inspiring musicianship, and his optimistic outlook on life.

There are so many moments with Nate that I'll remember: the meals at Walker Bros, Mr. Berger's middle eastern history class, marching up the hill at band camp each summer - the list goes on and on.

I wish I could have been there to remember Nate this past weekend. I hope the celebration of Nate's life is at least as sweet as it is bitter.

I'll really miss the guy.

Dear Woodring Family,

Nate was a good friend of my son Colin, and he is currently teaching in South Korea and was unable to come to the memorial service. I feel so sad for your family and all of his close friends from ETHS that Nate has been close to growing up as a young boy in Evanston and then later through college and post graduation. My younger son Jeremy played percussion in band with Dr. Fodor and he looked up to Nate as the best percussionist anyone could be ever be and he was always kind and supportive to all the younger percussionists. I remember the night he came over to our house and told us he was going to Michigan State and how proud he was to be studying music in college, and being a music instructor I was thrilled as well! I'm so sorry for your loss but I wanted to let you know how sad we all are and our hearts are with you at this difficult time.Colin wishes he could have been with you yesterday and sends his love and support to your family.

Bob Woodring and family... I did not know Nate but I felt Like I knew him because of his Dad. He talked about him and all his other children, plus his wife. My heart goes out to each and every one of you.
I've known Bob for over 10 years, through business and he always included me on discussing his children, as I talked about mine as well.
I've followed them through the Scouts, and how each of them excelled after that. I know about all of you.
Bob, you're a good man a great father and husband. I hope that you are at peace for what you did for Nate. God bless you and your family. I'm sorry that I can't attend.

Bob, Jennie, Jake and Andy,
Many years ago, Bob and I were sitting together in the stands, stressed out about how our sons were playing in a lacrosse game. During our conversation, I distinctly remember suggesting that all of us fathers were way too invested and connected to our sons.

Bob was kind enough not to tell me I was wrong. The truth is we fathers can never be too invested and connected to our sons. Nothing that happens can change that. My heartbreak about Nate's passing confirms it.

Dear Bob and Jennie and Family,

We are so saddened to hear of this unspeakable loss for you. We remember Nate fondly from ETHS, where he truly delighted all who came in contact with him with his kindness and musical talent. Our daughter, Molly, played with him in YAMO and so looked up to him. Our thoughts are with you all as we hold you all in our hearts.

May 25, 2016

Bob and Jennie - this is awful. What an absolutely great kid (man!) Nate is. We know the great joy that he brought to your family with his love of music and passion for life. When we think of the Woodring's, it's "family" that immediately comes to mind. Everything was always for the boys and the family. From the Boy Scouts to family vacations to leaving your job that required significant travel so Bob could always be close to home. So I can only imagine how much deeper this cuts because of your special closeness. But the Good News is that it is your family and your faith that will help all of you - all of us - pull through. You have been blessed with an amazing son. Celebrate his life. My sincere prayers go out to all of you.

I met Nate while he was a student at MSU and I ran a record store. He and his music buddies would do live performances in our shop a couple times a week. He was the nicest kid and I saw him here and there after we closed. A great, talented musician and a good all-around guy. Rest easy old friend.....
