Nellie "Helen" Benson Burton 1921-2006 Born in Leeds, England on July 29th, 1921, the 7th of 8 children, Nellie was passionate about dancing, ballro om dancing especially. She was also an avid swimmer. During WW II, she did her part for the war working at a factory. Nellie married George W.T. Burton in February 1948. They came to the United States aboard the Queen Elizabeth with their 2 children, Linda, and Paul in 1953 to be with family, including George's son Derrick Burton. Nellie and her family moved to Bellflower, CA in 1956 where she used her passion for gardening to produce beautiful grounds where they lived for the last 50 years. She was an acti ve member in the Bellflower PTA, and also became a 40 year volunteer for the Red Cross. She worked tirelessly, including blood mobiles for churches, schools, and businesses. In later years she was a member of the Bellflower Senior Group and enjoyed many extended trips with them. She was known by many for her kindness and generosity. Her thoughtfulness was appreciated by those lucky enough to know her; she had a way of making others feel special. A lifelong music lover, she shared that passion with her son a nd grandchildren, all musicians. She enjoyed their talents so very much. With her family by her side, Nellie passed away peacefully at home on November 27th, 2006. A loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Friend, she will be greatly missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Martha Benson, and her siblings: Alfred, Cliff, John, Edwin, Amy, Elsie, and Olive. Nellie is survived by her husband, George; son, Derrick; daughter, Linda (Mrs. Jesse Hamrick); son, Paul; granddaughters: Lisa and Hillar y (Mrs. Michael Stockman); and grandsons: Greg, Dylan and Julian. The family would like to thank the many in the medical community who cared for Nellie and did so much for her during her fight with cancer and her subsequent triumph over it. Private services have been held for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that in Nellie's (Helen's) memory donations be made to the Red Cross or the American Cancer Society. Grandma Helen was a wonderful lady and a cornerstone of our family. What strength and character she had. She will always be beloved in our hearts and fondly remembered. I am grateful for the time we had together.
