LOWELL -- Nicholas J. Tavoularis, 87, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died Thursday, May 19th, at his home in Kittery, Maine, following a brief illness, with his loving family by his side.

The beloved husband of Anna (Bavelas) Tavoularis, who survives him, the couple celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last September.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, March 7, 1924, the son of the late John Tavoularis and Katherine (Shilakos) Tavoularis, he was a graduate of Lowell High School and was recognized as an outstanding high school athlete. He was a star football player, listed as one of Lowell High's greatest sports legends of all times.

Mr. Tavoularis proudly served his country in the Army during World War II in the European and South Pacific campaigns, achieving the rank of Mess Sergeant.

From 1946, he co-managed the family restaurant and bar, The Laconia, in downtown Lowell until his retirement.

He was a lifelong member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church of Lowell, The Elks Club and the Lowell Family YMCA.

In 2004, Mr. Tavoularis was recognized by the Lowell Hellenic Institute for his outstanding sportsmanship and named into the ranks of the Hellenic All Century Team.

A devoted husband who loved his family and friends, his church, and the Red Sox, he will be missed by all who knew him.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, John Tavoularis and his wife, Ann D. of Westford, MA; two daughters, Katherine Lalos and her husband, James of Portsmouth, NH, and Aphrodite Zezas and her husband, Spero of Buffalo, WY; his five grandchildren, Nicholas and Christina Tavoularis, Christopher Lalos, Katetin and Victor Zezas; three sisters, Elizabeth Tavoularis of Chelmsford, MA, Pat Archambault of Newburyport, MA, and Georgia Moser of Rabat, Morocco; a sister-in-law, Caliope Bavelas of Royersford, PA; and many nieces and nephews.

TAVOULARIS -- In Kittery, Maine, May 19, 2011, Nicholas J. Tavoularis, 87 of Lowell, and Kittery, ME, beloved husband of Anna (Bavelas) Tavoularis. Friends may call at the O'DONNELL FUNERAL HOME, 276 Pawtucket St. at Fletcher from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service Monday morning at the TRANSFIGURATION GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH at 11 o'clock. Burial in Westlawn II Cemetery. Those wishing may make contributions in his memory to the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church Mortgage Elimination Fund, Fr. John Sarantos Way, Lowell, MA 01854. Very nice guy I worked at his home and he always sat down to talk and have lunch with his wife Ann and himself.He always smiled and told me jokes.He will be missed god bless him.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
