Nora Harte Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 18, 2025.
**Mrs. Nora Christina Harte (née Walsh)**

New York, NY - On June 16, 2025, Mrs. Nora Christina Harte (née Walsh) died peacefully in New York, leaving behind a legacy of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and a life lived with grace and a very dry wit. As for her age, she never told anyone-so we will not discontinue her secret now.

Born in County Mayo, Ireland, Nora was raised among the close-knit community surrounding Robeen Church in Holymount. Her early years on the family farm in Cornfield were shaped by the values instilled by her proud parents, Patrick and Katie (née Merrick) Walsh, and shared with her beloved siblings Martin, Maureen, Bridie, Tom, and Johnny-all of whom preceded her in death.

Nora eventually emigrated from Ireland to the United States in 1960, where she made her home in Sunnyside, Queens (close to her sister Maureen, brother Tom and extended family who had already laid warm New York roots). In this next chapter of her compelling life, she spent many years as hostess in Schrafft's in the Chrysler Building where a lifetime of friendships were made (and pranks quietly pulled for her own amusement on the self important); weekends were typically spent at dances in the Catskills, traveling / shopping, or often simply people watching at the World's Fair. She later moved on to work at Marriot where she ran executive dining for Exxon. During this time she was a devoted parishioner of Queen of Angels Church where her life rooted in faith, family, and silliness continued.

Then, the next chapter of her life began in 1977 when she married John "J.J." Harte (retired NYPD; proudly of the 67 Precinct) at St. Edmund's Church in Breezy Point, NY where she then moved-a union marked by love, laughter and partnership until his untimely young passing in 1983.

Throughout her life in New York-from the avenues of Sunnyside to the shores of Breezy Point and Rockaway Beach, and finally to the Upper East Side-Nora remained deeply connected to both her Irish roots and her adopted home. After Hurricane Sandy, displaced as many were from their communities, she fully embraced her new 'City Life,' genuinely enjoying the amusement of the hustle & bustle, and found spiritual refuge at St. Monica's Parish on the Upper East Side.

Nora is survived by her devoted son John T. Harte; her brother Patrick Walsh; long time friends; and nieces & nephews across the United States and Ireland who lovingly know her simply as "Aunt Nora." Her presence was a constant comfort to those around her-always listening more than speaking, and never repeating.

She believed that no matter what arose in life-be it joy or sorrow-the answer was simply to "walk it off." Whether along country paths in County Mayo, the beaches of Breezy Point & Rockaway, the Manhattan sidewalks or "Over the Avenue" in Queens, this simple philosophy carried her through decades with resilience, strength, and grace.

May Nora's memory bring comfort & a smile to all who knew her-and in her honor, may we each simply take a brisk walk today, and say a prayer for those in need, as she would do for each of us.

(...and lastly, as some may know, two weeks ago our family lost her nephew (our Cousin / Brother / Husband or Father) Gregory Walsh; and last week our family lost her sister-in-law (our Aunt / Wife / Sister / Mother or Grandmother) Roisin Walsh, and now this week, Nora - although all separate, they are somehow, in the mystery of life, tied together in this story of family events - we ask that you keep them all in your prayers as well).

Hi John T, it's with deepest sorrow that i post this. Nora was our family's favourite Aunt. The excitment when we heard that Nora was coming home from America was like Christmass day in the middle of Summer. We had such joy and fun with her as children in Cornfield and on all our travels around. God rest her soul and our thoughts and prayers with you John T
