Dear Debbie and family,
We share your loss and pray for you that God will support and guided you and the family. Marion was a great talented leader with many friends and many accomplishments and it has been a privilege for Chris and I to have known both you and Marion. We will miss him as we shared so many parallels in our lives. As a pediatrician he contributed to health and development of many families besides his own; what an accomplishment!!

Mitzi and I were so shocked to hear the sudden loss of Marion. In my capacity as Associate Dean for Basic Science, I worked with him closely at the USC School of Medicine from 2005-2011. He was a very compassionate person, and always smiled even when tackling the most difficult issues that our School was facing. He had so many accomplishments. I remember the day when he was elected to be the President of the American Academy of Pediatrics. It was a proud moment not only for Marion but also for the entire USC community. We will certainly miss him!

The State of South Carolina, The University of South Carolina and the Usc School of Medicine have lost a great man. I had the honor to work with Dr "B" as I called him at the USCSOM for 20+ years. Dr Burton was a great leader, teacher, doctor and in his role as Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, he had my greatest respect. He Cared about his family and he cared about the USCSOM and he cared about those of us who worked with him and appreciated everything anybody did for him. I know that he will be greatly missed but all of the various organizations that he worked with, but nobody will miss him more than me.

Dear Debbie and Family,
My love, prayers and condolences are with you all. Dr. Burton's kindness, grace, and dedication to children and family are examples to us all. He set the bar high and succeeded in his advocacy for children. His deeply good and kind character, values-based life, dedication to what is right and just and needed for children has moved SC forward and set many of us on a path of continuing his work, following his example and empowering us to keep moving forward to better care for the health and well being of children. He embodies the true physician. There is no better example. Likewise, the kindness, love and support for eachother and your family has always been an example to all who crossed your path. It is what so many long for. May you feel his love and presence and take comfort in the honorable person he is and the tremendous difference he made in this world, the life you shared together and the beautiful family you created and raised.
With love and sadness, Laura Basile

There are fewer an fewer physicians called to the profession as a servant rather than the profession simply being a career. Our state just lost one of the best actually called to serve God by caring for his fellow man; especially the children. It has been truly a blessing working with Dr. Burton at SCHA and at SCDHHS. He was a very special person and will be truly missed by many. May God bless your family in your loss.

Marion was a great role model in all he did in life and in his profession. His concern was always for the children and he never offered any excuses for what he said or did on their behalf. I admired his courage in that and will always keep that memory.
He was also a nice person and my heart goes out to Debbie and their family. His sudden passing is a great burden to bear and so I pray for him and for his family. He'll be missed by all.

I had the unique pleasure of working with Dr. Burton through SC DHEC. He was a caring and compassionate physician with a special sense of humor. His love of children and his vision of the need for their health care helped to solidify my love of Public Health and its role in our state. I will forever be grateful to him for helping me realize the role God had for me as a nurse and public health provider. My thanks to his family for sharing him with us. And my sympathy to both his family and the state of South Carolina. We have lost a true crusader for children in this state.

Dear Debbie - My heart and prayers are with you at this very sad time.I was lucky to have met Marion through our dear friend Mr. Pat Harris, and became good friends in our many get togethers, birthday parties, etc..., together with Tom Mangum, Marion Carnell, Jennings McAbee, to name a few. I felt so lucky and priviledged to call him my friend, and we were all so happy when he met you. Although it has been some 10 years since the last time we were together, I have never forgotten your wonderful husband - always so caring, and such a gentleman. Please accept my deepest sympathy. Marion was a true champion of human (and especially child) health. He helped so many young professionals, me included. He was my children's pediatrician in Anderson. I met Dr. Burton while working at SCDHHS. He was a joy to be around! He cared so deeply about the children of SC. His knowledge and expertise were exceptional; but, my favorite aspects of his character were his kind spirit and his "big ole heart".

Marion and I met in the fall of 2007. We were on the opposite sides of the health care equation; Marion as Medicaid Medical Director with an academic position at USC and myself as a managed care medical director. To his credit as a physician, gentleman and leader; he was able to work through complex matters and form alliances to best serve the Medicaid population and the doctors who provided their care. We became colleagues and friends. I'm deeply saddened by his loss.

My thought and prayers are with the family at this time.
Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorry. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, and pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you,,for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well.
