METHUEN — Ovid "Cal" H. Calderone, 92, died suddenly, surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at Caritas Holy Family Hospital in Methuen.
He was born on July 9, 1915 in Lawrence to Antonio and Marianna (Fiorante) Calderone. Cal attended Lawrence schools and graduated from Lawrence High School, Class of 1933. He continued his education, receiving a degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Class of 1937.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in England as captain of the Medical Administrative Core in charge of the pharmacy and additional duties.
Cal was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. O'Donnell, 4th Degree Knight. He was the former vice president for the Italian College Club of Lawrence. Cal served as president for the Greater Lawrence pharmaceutical association.
Member of the Methuen Senior Center, he enjoyed playing 45s and Shuffle Board. He attended St. Lucy's Church.
Cal owned and operated the Calderone Pharmacy in South Boston until entering the U.S. Army in 1942. He was a pharmaceutical representative for Sharpe Dohme Wyeth Company. He had owned and operated Calderone Pharmacy in Lawrence for 24 years. Cal worked for Lyon's and Tower Hill Pharmacy in Lawrence for many years until retiring in 1984.
Mr. Calderone is survived by his wife of 59 years, Anne R. (Messina) Calderone of Methuen; son, Dennis Calderone and his fiance Ginny Chaikin of Salem, N.H.; daughter, Paula May Casey and her husband Paul of Salem, N.H.; brother-in-law, George Rossi of Beverly; four grandchildren, Michael Calderone and his wife Renata of Hudson, N.H., Kimberly Ouellette and her husband Ryan of Londonderry, N.H., Ryan Casey and Shawn Casey of Salem, N.H.; four great-grandchildren, Juliana and Gabriela Calderone, Madison and Emily Ouellette; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Antoinette Rossi. He will be missed by his family.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, March 9, 2008 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen, MA 01844. Funeral services will begin at the funeral home on Monday, March, 10, 2008 at 8 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Lucy's Church, 254 Merrimack St., Methuen, MA 01844. Uncle Cal, You were and will always be my favorite Uncle. We have had alot of inside jokes and memories that will never be forgotten. I love you very much and think of you often. May you rest in peace.
Aunty Ann is in my thoughts and prayers and my condolences to the family.
