PARTHENIA PAPUGA Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 22 to Dec. 11, 2015.
PAPUGA PARTHENIA D. "AUNT PARTHY"
Born May 4, 1931, passed away quietly, on November 18, 2015. She was the youngest of 12 children born to Mary Barbara Janitor Papuga and George Vincent Papuga of Jane Street, Southside. Her siblings preceding her to the pearly gates are Emory, George, Joseph, Hildagarde, Margo and John Papuga, Mary Bennet, Martha Stavros, Elizabeth Rodgers and Clara McDonnell. Parthy is survived by one sister, Matilda Larson; and her sister-in-law, Kay Papuga. She also had 26 nieces and nephews and too many great and grandnieces and nephews to count. Parthy was a lifelong teacher and continued her love for teaching even into retirement. After graduating from The University of Houston she spent her entire teaching career in Houston, Texas. Parthy loved being involved, and as coach of the Carlton Cadettes flag squad led her team to several national championships, marched and performed in well-known parades around the country, and received numerous letters of congratulations, including several from U.S. Congressman Albert Thomas and Doorkeeper "Fishbait" Miller. Parthy was an avid world traveler visiting many far off and remote lands even living in Japan for a year. St. Peter's Episcopal Church was a cornerstone in her life. As an active longtime member she was involved with everything from teaching Sunday school, organizing and managing the annual flea market, participating with the bereavement group, to keeping the kitchen in order! Parthy's open friendliness, love of life, easy going manner and "Do the Right Thing Attitude" will be missed by all who knew her. A memorial service will be held at St. Peter Episcopal Church, 4048 Brownsville Road, Brentwood on December 12, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-881-4100. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church or a charity of your choice. Please send condolences to:

We were so fortunate to have “Parthy P” as our sponsor in the Scottish Brigade at Austin High School in Houston. She was a very patient woman with so many teenage girls under her care. My condolences to the Papuga family. She was one of a kind and I’m sure will be truly missed.

This is Aunt Parthy's great niece, Kate, daughter of her sister Betty's son, Lee. I am so happy and touched to have found this page years after her departure and am not at all surprised that so many people have such kinds things to say from the course one of her life. She lived with our family on and off when we were young helping my mom and dad with my brother, sister and I...and our lives were all the more joyful for her presence! My first feelings of integrity, kindness and strength are all connected to early memories of her...now when thoughts of her come, I can't help but smile (and cry a little bit) for all the selfless love she showered us with. Side note: this is an amazing way to remember loved ones! So happy to have seen everyone's comments. Loved you first Parthy! ;) look forward to sharing some more photos here.

Ms. Papuga...you were such a big part of my life at Jeff Davis 1963-1966. You encouraged me in the Carlton Cadettes, you listened, you were firm but there was always a twinkle in your eye for all of us girls. I still tell the tale of our senior trip and being caught in the hall after borrowing an iron and I thought I was going to be in big trouble, but she said, don't tell the other girls but you are not in trouble! Now if I find you here again.....!! What a wonderful woman. I know she touched so many peoples lives as she did mine. Rest peacefully.

My deepest sympathy to the Papuga family..It's been almost a year.. and I just found out today..She was my 8th grade P.E. teacher at Hogg Jr High, then she was with the Carlton Cadettes at Jeff Davis.. then yrs later she was my daughter's P.E. teacher at Black Jr High.. all in Houston.. She was never too busy to stop and say hello..or give someone a smile.. She was the sweetest teacher..and I've often thought about her through the years...

I only got to spend a few years with Parthy, however she left a mark on my heart. We would kid each other often and she always had a smile for me. I am sorry that I didn't come over fast enough to see you, know that I will miss you and think of you often. See you soon.

Truly a beautiful and beloved lady. Parthy taught two of my grandsons in Sunday School when they were very young. She was definitely an important part of St. Peter's Church. I enjoyed being with Parthy and working with her at the church. I know her family will welcome her home in heaven! Truly a great lady.
