Patricia Gulyas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2017.
Patricia Ann Gulyas, 86, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2017. Pat was born in Aurora, Illinois on October 23, 1930, the first daughter of the late Audrey (DeCelle) and Wiley Tarr. She was the oldest of 4 fun-loving sisters: Joan (Tom) Fleury, Jackie (Bob) Seitz, and Jeri (Charlie) McBryde. Pat attended St. Catherine's High School in Racine, Wisconsin. She went on to attend Dominican College where she received her B.A. in Liberal Arts and then her teaching credential. She began her career as a Kindergarten teacher in Racine. Pat married Steven Albert Gulyas on July 17, 1954 in Racine, WI. In June 1957, the couple packed up their station wagon and their 2 young daughters, Mary and Anne, and headed west to Ukiah, Calif where Steve planned to join his brother Joseph Gulyash, M.D. in his medical practice. Steve worked as a dispensing optician with his brother before starting his own dispensing business, Mendocino Optical. Patricia resumed teaching, first at St. Mary's School (1962-63) as the Third grade teacher. The next year she was hired as the new Kindergarten teacher for Yokayo School where she introduced generations of Kindergarteners to the world of "going into outer space" and "clean-up time accompanied by Mrs. Gulyas on the piano". She loved children and she had a gift for working with the youngest of them. She retired from teaching in 1990. In addition to playing piano for her Kindergarten students, Pat also volunteered as the pianist for many years at St. Mary's of the Angels church in Ukiah. She played at the 5:15 Saturday Mass for many, many years. Patricia is survived by her six children, Mary Gulyas, Anne (Jim) Nix, Tom (Karen) Gulyas, Joanne (Sam) Foord, John (Patty) Gulyas, and Bob Gulyas; ten grandchildren, Natalie Gulyas, Steve Foord, Jackie Foord, Joseph Foord, Julie Nix, Alisa Nix, Tyler Gulyas, Morgan Gulyas, Jordan Gulyas, Tatum Gulyas; and 2 greatgrandchildren, Kadence Foord, and Ayla Jade Fox. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Steve in 1983 and her sister Joan Fleury in February 2017. Patricia was very loved and will be greatly missed. A private internment will take place at the Ukiah Cemetery. Eversole Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Patricia was always kind and gracious to all us kids in the neighborhood. It was my pleasure to live next door. She will be missed. Rest in peace.

She was one of the best teachers I ever had. (kindergarten, Yokayo, 1980/1981). Prayers and condolences to her family.
