Patricia Holland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 25 to Jul. 26, 2023.
Patricia Terry Holland, wife of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2023. She was surrounded in love by her husband and children at the time of her passing.

She was born to Maeser and Marilla Terry on February 16, 1942 and was raised in Enterprise, Utah. Her childhood years were shaped by the rich pioneer values of her forbearers who settled the area, and by the fun and industry of helping at the family store and on the family farm. By the third grade it was clear she had unusual musical talent, playing the piano-by ear-for school musical activities.

During her freshman year of high school, she moved with her family to St. George, ostensibly to accommodate her father's growing business. In reality, the greater purpose of that move was that she met Jeff Holland, a bright, handsome, dimpled, and overly-confident sophomore athlete. He and the rest of the school were immediately smitten by her kindness, talent, beauty and spirituality. Eventually the two started dating and a love affair began that has never stopped.

During these high school years, she served as a class officer, led the cheer team, was honored multiple times by her classmates for her charm and talents, starred in and played the piano for a number of school musicals. After waiting for her sweetheart to serve a mission in England, she let him know that it was his turn to wait for her as she took a year to train with Julliard instructors in voice and piano in New York, where she also served as a stake missionary.

On June 7, 1963, Patricia and Jeffrey were married in the St. George Utah Temple where three generations of her maternal ancestors had also been sealed.

All her life she said her greatest joys were found in being a mother to her three children, Matthew, Mary Alice, and David. She joyfully devoted herself to building their faith, taking care of their needs, supporting their education, cheering on their athletics, training them in music, and creating a home where every friend in the neighborhood wanted to come and never leave.

She was educated at Dixie College (Utah Technical University), LDS Business College (Ensign College), and Brigham Young University. Each of these institutions later honored her for her meritorious accomplishments in life.

She will long be remembered for her loving and articulate service as the First Lady of Brigham Young University from 1980-1989, and as a First Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency from 1984-1986, having a tremendous influence on the development of the Young Women Values.

She authored several books. "A Quiet Heart" earned multiple honors, including the Association for Mormon Letters award for devotional literature. For the last 34 years, she has joined with her husband in his role as a General Authority and Apostle, teaching and testifying of Jesus Christ and the Restoration of His Church. Her numerous devotional addresses, firesides, and Church talks have inspired, edified, and comforted saints all around the world.

The abundant joy of raising her children was greatly magnified by the arrival of thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Jeffrey, her children Matthew (Paige), Mary Alice (Lee), and David (Jeanne), and siblings Reginald (Linda), Fenton (Ilona), David (Linda), Steven (Marie), and Sherene (David). Her parents, Maeser and Marilla, and brother Joe (Leann), preceded her in death.

Funeral services are open to the public and will be held Friday, July 28, 2023 at 11 a.m. in the Conference Center Theater in Salt Lake City. There will not be a public viewing. Interment will be in St. George, Utah the following day. Funeral services are under the direction of Russon Mortuary & Crematory.

Dear President Holland and Family--(Jeff from our days in the 44th Ward in Bountiful-so many years ago.)
One of the many blessings (miracles) I have received from my Heavenly Father has been friends like the Hollands. My dear Pat was a wonderful influence in my life. When my dear Don passed away - some 16 years ago- people said to me, 'He's in a better place" . I know he is but I would think, "No, a better place is here with me". And Dear Jeff, he is, in my heart, just like Pat is there with you and your family.
My best wishes-with Lots of Love,
Alice (Don) King

President Holland, you don't know me, but I was blessed to serve as a Sec. at BYU AROTC (1986 - ) when you served as President there with Patricia by your side. It has been two years since she went to her Heavenly home, but I still pray for your health and comfort as you strive to continue your service without her. I am somewhat acquainted with ministering angels, and so believe she still blesses and comforts you as she can. I do know your wonderful son-in-law, Elder Lee McCann, as he was my Stake President. To make it short " birds of a feather." I am so thankful for Patricia and her life and example. Bless you all. You will remain in my prayers. It was a joy to see your improved health at our April 2025 Conf.

When you lived near us
(by the Provo Temple) when I was young my sister Barbara would babysit your kids and I would go down with her to your home. I remember one day when I was sitting with Sister Holland as she fed a yummy meal to Duffy which has always been my favorite meal ever since then. Your home was inviting and full of love. Sincere condolences. May you receive the comfort and peace needed at this time. Love, Connie Francom Averett

Elder and President Holland,

I use the term "President" as you were the President during my schooling at BYU.

One day was a bit gloomy or tough for me, and I happened to pass you near the HFAC building. I recall that you passed me with a cheery "hello" and it lifted my spirits.

I sent you a note about this and you sent me one of your books with a short message and signature.

You had much to do at this time of your life and you took the time to respond, for which I am grateful.

Also, you have lifted my spirit coupled with tears of joy many times with your thoughtful conference addresses.

I pray for you and your family at this time.

While your heart is broken, you have the certain knowledge of a glorious resurrection and eternity with your sweet wife.

I offer my shoulder of support and expression of love.

May you feel of the love and support of Heavenly Father and the Savior at this time.

Thank you for your wonderful example and words of encouragement during good times and bad.

With love and respect, David

Elder Holland,

While I never personally met anyone in your family, you all have impacted my life for good.
Elder Holland, I love you. I loved your wife Patricia so much! Seeing her at your side was a joy. She will be missed so much by all of us.
I hope you know how much you're loved. May God be with you as you mourn the passing of your sweet wife. I am certain she will never be very far away. However, her preceding you in death means she is surely up there waiting with anxious joy for a most wonderful and loving reunion.
Thank you for bolstering my testimony all these years. For being who you are. For making me laugh. For helping me understand when my heart was hard. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Love,

Jeffery Hughes

Dear, Dear Brother (Jeff) Holland and your three wonderful children. You will remember me (and Don) King from our 44th ward here in Bountiful. ?
I was re-reading the very sweet 'thank-you' card from our dear Pat. She (was) is soooo sweet--I love her dearly. I remember cute 'little' Matt helping me with my Sunday School rolls-when I was secretary!! I remember the three amazing children preforming at a program at the ward.
I remember Pat saying about Mary Alice " she would loosen her apron strings--never untie them". I'm trying to remember David's funny nick-name?
Wonderful memories of my dear friends.
I'm so very sorry for your sadness at this time.
I love you all very much!!!!!
Alice King-
I'm still in Bountiful-in an assisted living facility. This is a good place for me-I'm happy here-lots of new friends. I just turned 96. My health is surprisingly good for my age.

I adore Pat and agree with Elder Holland in that she is an angel! I had the privilege of getting to know her in the Ensign 2nd ward. Always a glow about her! I seriously use her as my model of what I am striving to be! She will be missed here but her spirit will definitely carry on. I am sure heaven is thrilled to have her back. Much love to Elder Holland and all the family.

I got to know Pat back in 1966 when her husband was Bishop of the Institute of Religion in Seattle. She was a charming, bright, engaging and friendly, and one of her greatest strengths was a positive and giving nature which no one could ever forget. Certainly I did not. She and her husband always inspired me to be a better human being, and for that I will always be supremely grateful. Rest in Peace, Pat Holland.

We are so sorry to hear of Sis. Holland, Patsy's, passing. My husband, Kenneth Gull, spent a lot of his life in the home of the Terry's with Joe, her brother. They were a great influence in his life and his testimony and service in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Although Patricia was married and out of the home when he was older he remembers her as the older sister. The rest of her family has continued to be a great influence in our lives as friends and leaders. We appreciate all Sis. Holland has done in her leadership, writings and messages we have enjoyed hearing. Our love and condolences to your great family & appreciation for the lifelong service you have offered.

While serving a mission in the SLCHQ mission, t least once a week I would be in the elevator, or pass shoulders with Elder and Sister Holland. They were very kind, and always smiling. I remember getting a hug from sister Holland. What a treat.

I am so saddened by the death of your sweetheart and I wish I could give you a big hug and tell you how sorry I am and how I know you will miss her like crazy. It is a hard thing to lose your mate. My heart aches for you and I pray for your comfort and blessing knowing what we know. My love to you, Jeff, and your beautiful family.

I loved the soft and beautiful spirit that came from Sister Holland when I watched and listened to her talk. Sister Holland and Brother Holland certainly both married up. I don't think that it was just by chance that these children of God met each other upon this Earth and got married ...... I'm sure that God and Jesus had their hands in helping bless this wonderful couple, with each other. I'm sure that the heart of Brother Holland aches by not being able to have his wife and companion by his side for a short season, but I'm thrilled that Brother Holland knows what comes next after the veil has been lifted and they will be together again, and this time for Eternity. Brother Holland, I know that Heavenly Father will pour out His special blessings upon you to give you the strength that you need continue to bless the People of this World with your presence upon this Earth.
