Paul Clinton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2010.
HYANNIS — Paul Yale Clinton, 79, passed away June 29, 2010, in Hyannis, with his loving family at his side.

Paul was born Feb. 14, 1931, in Boston where he grew up in Jamaica Plain and later graduated from Boston Latin High School in 1948.

After high school Paul attended Boston College where he was selected to join Alpha Sigma Nu, the Cross and Crown Society, and also was elected treasurer of his senior class. In 1952, the day after he graduated from Boston College, Paul married his college sweetheart, Kathleen Scanlan.

After he graduated from Harvard Business School in 1954, Paul worked the next 15 years for a Boston-area chemical specialties company, Dewey and Almy Chemical Co., in various sales and management positions. In 1970, he joined a prominent family investment company in New York City and founded a venture-capital fund, Geneve Corp., of which he was president.

Before Paul's retirement he spent several interesting years with a large private regional shopping center development company in Pennsylvania. He was also served on several mutual fund boards and was active in the successful buildup of the asset management business of Aquila Asset Management and Oppenheimer Funds.

Paul and Kathy divided their time between Osterville on Cape Cod and Naples, Fla., so they would be able to do what they enjoyed most all year-round, which included spending time with family, especially their grandchildren, golf, traveling, swimming, walking, reading, movies and theater. He was a devoted Red Sox and Bruins fan. He was a proud father, a loving husband and a loyal friend who will be missed by all that knew him.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, John and Gertrude Clinton; and a brother, John B. Clinton.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Kathleen Scanlan Clinton; three sons, Peter Y. Clinton and his wife Dorinda of Bedford Corners, N.Y., John B. Clinton and his wife Shannon of Avon, Conn., and Matthew A. Clinton and his wife Traci of Manhasset, N.Y.; along with 10 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2010, in the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road (Route 28), Marstons Mills. A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 3, at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 76 Wianno Ave., Osterville. Interment will follow at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004; 800-533-2873; www.jdrf.org.

Mrs. Clinton & Family,

I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Clinton's passing. I so enjoyed chatting with you both at Countyside Pool. One of the last times we spoke he asked me if I could ever get in the habit of calling him by his first name. I was never able to, he was always kind and thoughtful to me when I visited my parents.

Prayers from my family to yours.

The many Virginia Clintons extend our deepest sympathy. I know there is great sorrow right now for your family. Use the strength of each other to focus on the good times and the great accomplishments. Paul and my father grew up in a unique family environment. Both were extremely smart and had many professional accomplishments but they cherished their family like nothing else. Our thoughts are with you.

Dear Kathy and Family:
I am so very sorry for your loss. I treasured and enjoyed Paul's friendship so much. Whether we were discussing the latest book we'd read or hot topics of the day, or the latest in Countryside gossip, our time poolside was always so special. It won't be the same. I know what a tremendous loss this is for your family. I hope you may all find some comfort in the many memories you have, and in the knowledge that Paul will no longer suffer or feel pain. My life has certainly been enriched through my friendship with Paul, he was much loved and will be dearly missed. Sending love and prayers your way.
