Paul Condon Obituary

Paul Condon

Paul Gregory Joseph Condon passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2021, in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

Paul is survived by his faithful wife Marcia; his children Tim Condon (wife Cindy), Anne Gear (husband Dale) and Kevin Condon (wife Mary); and six grandchildren. Paul is predeceased by his brother Fred (who served his country in WWII) and his sister Elizabeth.

Paul was born in Canada on March 12, 1933 to John and Margaret Condon. He enjoyed a childhood filled with sports. After becoming the first in his family to ever graduate from college, he pursued a teaching career. Paul ultimately became one of the first employees of the Athletic Department of the University of Waterloo (Canada) in 1966 where he worked until 1996. While at the University of Waterloo, he became the first employee of the Ontario University Athletic Association, pioneered sports information networks throughout Canada, initiated the CIAU Top Ten Rankings, and was a founding member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches of Canada. Paul also served on the University of Waterloo Board of Governors and was the President of the University of Waterloo Staff Association.

Paul was an extraordinary athlete, playing many sports including basketball and baseball. He won the national championship in basketball while attending the University of Western Ontario, had a minor-league tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and finished the Boston Marathon in 3 hours 32 minutes.

Paul's involvement in Canadian athletics provided him with tremendous experiences. He provided color commentary for university sports television broadcasts and served as the manager of Canada's national basketball team when it competed in Russia. Paul was ultimately inducted into the University of Waterloo Warriors Hall of Fame as a Builder in 1998.

Paul was a caring husband, engaged father, good friend, and community leader. He so enjoyed his annual visits with his wife Marcia and their lifetime friends of Kavoo, which met every year for over 60 years. He will be forever remembered for building an ice-skating rink in the backyard for his young children every winter; then putting a pool in the backyard which was filled with neighbourhood kids all summer long.

The family has created the Paul Condon Waterloo Warriors Determined Athlete Award that will be presented annually to the student athlete at the University of Waterloo who embodies the love of sports, grit, and determination.

Marcia:
I am saddened to read about the death of your husband. It sounds like he had an amazingly full life and that you were a great support to him. Gerry, my husband, thought very highly of Paul.

Just learned of Paul´s passing via a fellow Western grad.
We were friends way back in 1953-1956 at Western and sadly never connected again.
However sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Marcia and family. I am so sorry to hear about Paul's passing and I am so very sorry for your loss. Although I only knew Paul the last few years of his life it was an honor to get to know him and you too Marcia. May the love of family and friends guide you through this difficult time.
