Paul DORAZIO Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Jan. 15, 2016.
DORAZIO, Paul "Revere"
November 28, 1941 – January 3, 2016
Father and friend to many, Paul passed away quietly in his sleep on January 3, 2016 at the age of 74. He was predeceased by both parents and a younger sister.
He leaves to mourn his loss, wife, Dr. Pat Hughes, many friends and family, and his long-time friend of 45 years, Greg Dempson.
Known as Paul "Records" Revere, he was a radio disc jockey and personality whose career spanned 50+ years. Born in Toronto, his true "home' was Regina, where he not only became a local institution, but also made lasting friends.
Paul knew rockabilly, roots rock, folk, R & B, doo- wop, soul, country, British Invasion, MOR, and obscure novelty records like nobody else.
His career took him to radio stations across Canada. He was well-known for his love of the oldies, 1950s to 1980s and his encyclopedic knowledge of all genres of music. Always quick with a smile and a story, Paul will be missed by many friends and family throughout the world.
His humble radio sign-off typifies his personality: "Thank you for your time, this time until next time…it's really been a pleasure." Until we meet again in rock 'n roll heaven, may you rest in peace.
Celebrations of Paul's life will be held in Edmonton on Monday, January 18th), 2016 at 7 p.m. at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home 10011-114 Street, Edmonton, Alberta

Paul got a good sendoff last night. The service was heartfelt and a good reflection of the man and his priorities... lots of music...Elvis hymns, a dash of Enya and a soul classic for the recessional. Pat was amazing in her remembrances and recitation of memorial poems. Did my best to pay respects in a tribute comment near the end, concerning how positive Paul was despite his many medical issues (never one to grumble, although he had ample cause) and what a great mentor and FAN he was. He wasn't a dispassionate observer of the music scene, spinning records to pay the bills... he was in it up to the armpits. He loved the music he presented and got to chum around in interviews and green-rooms with the first-generation rockers, country and soul artists he so admired. You can't find enthusiasm like that in many people, but Paul had it in abundance.
We mourners are a tight-knit bunch, and in keeping with the personality of the dearly departed, we took him out pubbing with us later on. What the hell, it was perfectly appropriate in Paul's case! O2s pub is in the ground level of Pat and Paul's building, and he and Greg would often just pop down the elevator for a drink or to catch some sports coverage. The establishment was very kind in giving us staff rates on drinks and munchies for our little wake in remembrance of a good customer. Paul's urn was in a purple velvet bag with gold braiding, looking for all the world like an oversize Crown Royal bag, which he'd have found hilarious. He was right in the thick of things, just as he'd have wanted to be.
Insofar as it's possible to have a peaceful passing and to be celebrated (hard!) by one's nearest and dearest, in the manner one would choose, I think Paul hit a home-run. His Regina radio colleagues will have an opportunity to say goodbye on the May long weekend during a remembrance ceremony there. Fair skies and following winds, Paul.

Friends are the Flowers in the Garden of life. Will miss you Paul, but will meet again one day in Heaven .

Paul. What can I say. To truly one of the most incredible human beings ever. I never met you in person, but I really grew to love you anyway. We shared many things: Our passion for music, our quirky "12 year-old" humour, our love for puns and wit, and our eternal love for the same woman. I think Pat was blessed to have found you..and you were blessed to have found her.

I regret not having met you in person and having music "debates" because, I swear, I know The Beatles even better than you do..We will have this argument in heaven when the time comes..(Or we could personally ask John Lennon and George Harrison) Paul, it is truly a new, and somewhat strange concept..only possible in today's world..But man, I got to like you so much. From me to you my friend.."There will be an answer..Let It Be"

I didn't know him but the look on his face when he looked at you was that of true love, happiness and comfort. He met the woman of his dreams and together you were perfect. He will be watching and waiting to hold your hand when the time is right.

We are so glad that we had met Paul. Listening to his stories of the people that he had met put me in awe.
We both had a Love of Elvis Presley and his music.
He was into X Files, aliens and cover ups and so was I we had wonderful conversations together about this. It was exciting.
His love of music was greatly shared every time he put on his show. If at anytime that I want to hear his voice all I have to do is put on one of his Friday Night shows.
I will miss him, Rest in Peace my friend and Brother.
Pat, I am so sorry for your loss.
We will see him again and party on together forever.

So sad to hear of Paul's passing. My long lost cousin. For many years I had been searching to find him and finally connected via Facebook. I was glad to know that he had such a happy, productive life and so many close friends and family. All my best to Pat. Remember that his spirit will always be with you.

I'm not disputing nor diminishing that lousy things happen, like my becoming a widow this month, but there is so much good in the world to be thankful for, let's celebrate those moments.

I was blessed to have my Paul for almost 6 wonderful years. Yes, I will miss him for the rest of my life, but a part of him will be with me forever, and for that I am grateful.

No doubt he will have everyone singing and dancing in heaven in no time, pain free. He will reunite with old friends and have a party arranged before the day is done.

Rest in peace, my love, and I know you have the gift to keep everyone giggling and rockin' to the oldies. Missing you.

Thank you for your time, this time, until next time...it's really been a pleasure.

I was so shocked and saddened to get the call from Greg to tell me of Paul's passing. I worked with this gentle giant in the mid 70's and early 80's at CKRM Regina when Paul was considered one of the best in the business. I was quite young then and more than a little intimidated by Paul's stature in radio but he made me feel like one of the boys right away and turned out to be a great friend. I'm thankful for the time I spent with him over Christmas in 2014, I was so pleased to see how well he was doing and that he was continuing to bring his talent and vast music knowledge to a great following of online listeners.
My sincere sympathy on the loss of a truly great guy.
