Paul Fredrick HAMBLIN

Passed away, surrounded by family at RVH in Barrie on November 26, 2022, at the age of 84. Paul was predeceased by his beloved wife Sandra (nee Caldwell). He will be dearly missed by his son Murray and daughter-in-law Tiiu. Paul was a devoted grandfather to Grant and Keira. Paul is survived by his three sisters, Jane, Betsy (David), and Mary (Peter) and many nieces and nephews. He was born in Toronto to Dr. Garnet Hamblin and his wife Doris (Williamson) and spent an active childhood in the city, at camp and in the country with his extended family. In high school, Paul was a competitive swimmer at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute. Afterwards, he went on to receive a degree in engineering from the University of Toronto, a master's degree in engineering physics from UBC, and a PhD in oceanography from the University of Washington in Seattle. Paul had a very successful career as a research scientist at the Canada Center for Inland Waters in Burlington, Ontario where he specialized in the field of Limnology (NWRI). He authored and edited many scientific papers over his career and worked as an adjunct professor at McMaster University. His work and travels took Paul to every continent including sabbaticals in Perth, Australia and Christchurch, New Zealand. He was also a scientific advisor to the Georgian Bay Association for many years. Paul was a passionate jazz fan who attended many concerts in Toronto and was an ardent supporter of live music in Simcoe County. Paul was also a life-long outdoor enthusiast who was involved in cottaging, boating, hiking, Nordic skiing, road biking and mountain biking until nearly the end of his life. He enjoyed many amazing trips with his wife Sandra over the years where they pursued their love of snorkelling. There will be a service at St. James Cemetery in Toronto in the Spring.
