Paul Kusmierz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 9 to Jan. 12, 2023.
Kusmierz, Paul Bay City, Michigan Paul Thomas Kusmierz of Bay City, Michigan, passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2023, at the age of 83. Paul was born in Bay City on June 30th, 1939. A lifelong artist and student of the world, Paul first experienced the transformative power of the arts as a small child when he viewed a 50-foot triptych altar adorned with ten life-sized figures and attempted to capture the image with crayons on loose-leaf paper. From that pivotal moment emerged a celebrated career for Paul, with the guiding ambition to preserve and foster true beauty in the world. Having always found pleasure and expression in drawing, paint entered as a new medium for the young artist at the age of 13. His muses were abundant: libraries were the sources for his study of the classics and art history, a serene garden offered him lessons on nature and light, and neighbors were often the source for portraiture and studies of anatomy. At 17 came the first awards in exhibitions with requests for his works. Sales continued, allowing him at the age of 24 to spend the first of three full summers experiencing Greece, Crete, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and England. Paul's devotion to his native state has produced many works, in all media, of the magnificent seasons and beautiful country scenes. Private exhibitions of the works in oil, water color, drawings and sculpture completed either abroad or in his Athens and Bay City studios were highly successful. Among the many portraits Paul painted were Rudolf Nureyev, John F. Kennedy, and Popes Pius XII, John XXIII and Paul VI. His work endures in several public and private collections throughout Europe and the United States, and his art has been displayed in many galleries throughout the world, including in Bay City, Chicago, Palm Beach, New York City and Athens, Greece. Throughout his career, Paul has experienced the joy of entertaining everyone from monarchs and celebrities to students and friends, eager to illuminate ways of seeing the everyday beauty around them. Paul spent his entire life creating beauty and art and sharing his knowledge of the world with countless friends, confidants, students, and collectors. For all that knew him, Paul was a force for recognizing and appreciating beauty in all aspects of life, and he will always be remembered for his fierce intellect, artistic vision, and tenacious spirit. He is survived by his daughter, Katherine (Jonathan) Lundeen and grandson Quentin. Paul was one of five siblings and is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 13th at Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Bay City, Michigan, preceded by a visitation at 9:00 a.m., Fr. Rick Filary presiding. A private graveside service at Elm Lawn Cemetery will follow for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Delta College Fine Arts Program, Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum, or other local organizations that support and nurture young artists. I was lucky to spend delicious afternoons with Paul in his garden in Bay City. I knew of him, but had not actually met him until visiting him with a man that I was dating. Once introduced, Paul shared lovely stories of being interviewed by my mom, Elizabeth "Gay" McGee, a writer for the Bay City Times. He commented on what a lovely and bright woman she was. Later, when talking with my mom about my meeting Paul, she also commented on holding him in very high regard.

I have a picture of Paul and me taken by our mutual friend, Darius. I later was able to purchase a painting done by Paul that I still cherish to this day. When mom passed I was given a painting that he had painted for her. Now they both adorn my walls with the beauty and appreciation of nature Paul found in his garden.

I know that this is quite a late posting to this page of remembrance, but my life in Chicago is very, very. And, although I have thought of Paul frequently it was only today that I actually had the time to see if my suspicions were correct; that Paul had passed to the next garden of his life.
With loving memories,
Susan McGee (daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Peter McGee)

Getting to know and love Paul both as a person and as an artist makes me grateful to have been blessed with many happy memories.
I was first introduced to his work, which led to becoming a collector. I loved his uniqueness and he instilled in me a love of the arts. He found beauty in the things we take for granted. A flower growing in the crack of the pavement was something he celebrated as a true miracle of nature. Through his eyes I was enriched by beauty all around me.
Katie, I am so sorry to have learned too late of his passing. I know how much he adored you. You were his pride and joy. I am so glad I got to see you together a few years ago. Much love and my deepest sympathy.

I purchased numerous paintings from Paul, and have fond memories discussing art with him.

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend his event honoring his Mother. I googled numerous times to learn whether he was still in Bay City. About a week before he died I remember looking at his painting in our dining room for a long time. It is so very beautiful and honors his appreciation for the simple landscapes in our area. Paul is deeply missed by so many.

Also, I learned Paul was involved in teaching my nephew on his art. Paul shared his knowledge with so many and is missed.

I am so very saddened to hear of Paul´s passing. Though we haven´t been in touch for many years I have such fond memories of many evenings spent at the house on Birney Street in the late 70s and early 80s. He was such a great story teller, and for me, way back then, he was so worldly. He had so much passion and enthusiasm for the arts, travel, and just life in general. I remember when I went to Medical School he was so eager to hear all about my anatomy classes...said he was jealous that I could get so up close to the human body and all it´s beauty. May he rest in paradise.

I am so sorry to hear this. I just met Paul around 12 years ago from his very close friend Richard Castanier. I was so amazed when we sat and talked about the Old World. He would love it when I would drop off homemade pies, he claimed his favorite was the pumpkin. I loved sitting around the table with him talking for hours. He always said I had an old soul. I will truly miss this man of many talents.

Paul was my neighbor as a child, he would bribe me with treats and a garden visit to keep quite as he painted. I didn't realize how much he influenced me as an artist during a time my identity was growing. Thank you Mr. Kusmierz for showing your colors and inviting me to show mine. Much Love.

Paul was my neighbor as a child, he would bribe me with treats to keep quite while he painted. I didn't know how much his influence would mean to me as an artist, especially at a time my identity was still growing. Thank you Paul for showing me it's okay to show my colors. Much love.

I took private art lessons from Paul in our home many years ago and I just loved learning how to paint beautiful flowers and landscapes. Paul was a good and very patient teacher. We have a couple of Pauls paintings one which was commissioned by our daughter for us and we truly enjoy it. We met Katie thats what he called her when she was just a little girl. She was very sweet and definitely one of the greatest joys in his life. John and I are truly very sorry for your loss.

I have many fond memories of drinking tea with Paul in his backyard garden. He gave me a lot of encouragement in my drawing and writing. When I Illustrated a woman comic character, he asked to look at it, he made a remark saying,
"You haven't had any formal art training have you?"
I replied "No."
He said nonchalantly, "It shows."

After a brief cigar break (Paul kept some 1/2 smoked cigars in his freezer), Paul looked at my comic illustrations again, made a few wavy gestures with his fingers, "You need to add more pink around her cheeks, breasts, and thighs... it's warmer.. as those areas are full of blood."

For the next 27 years, every time I drew or Illustrated a woman's cheeks, breasts, or thighs, I always remembered Pauls advice upon final touch ups, added pink tones, and thought of him.

His grace and style shaped mine and I am eternally grateful that I knew (and learned from) Paul.

I worked with Paul many years ago. He gifted a beautiful black and white painting to me and my husband as a wedding gift when I got married in 1964. I still cherish that painting. Paul was a special person. Nancy (Louis) Layher, Sebewaing, MI

I took my first painting class from Paul when I was a senior in high school. We painted geraniums. I brought in one of my paintings from school and he said, "why are you painting geraniums "? He was an interesting person. He showed us slides from his travels. I think it was also the first time I drank wine.

Mr. Kusmierz was a customer when I worked at Maplewood on Johnson. I always wished to wait on him so we could get into a conversation. He was fascinating and a true gentleman. May his vibe be felt always by those he impacted, no matter how small.
