Paul Sager Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 30, 2008.
Paul Jones Sager 1940 ~ 2008 Paul Jones Sager passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, November 22, 2008, after a valiant battle with chronic health issues. Such a tremendous effort was a hallmark of Paul's personality, as he strived to do his best to make sure others were taken care of before him. His main concern was that his family would be taken care of after he was gone. Paul was born August 16, 1940 in Murray, Utah to parents J. Elmo and Blanche Mary Sager and grew up with his brothers David and Howard in Midvale, Utah. As a youth Paul was mischievous yet harmless, a fine pianist and enjoyed being the manager of his high school basketball team. Paul was called as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) to the North Central States Mission in 1960. While attending Brigham Young University, Paul met his beautiful bride, Linda, and married her in the LDS Temple in Los Angeles on September 5, 1963. Paul and Linda celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this past September. Paul taught 5th grade in Minneapolis, MN for two years and then moved to Ukiah, CA where he taught 5th and 6th grades. He was offered the position of principal in Ukiah, but declined because he felt he could reach the students on a more personal level by remaining a teacher. Paul then went to Washington State and taught 5th grade for 20 years and was an elementary school librarian for the final 7 years in the Mukilteo School District. Paul taught a total of 33 years before retiring in 1997. Many may remember Paul as Mr. Sager, the teacher who loved his students, challenged them to reach their potential and tried to make the students laugh at least once each day. Many may also remember Mr. Sager as the teacher who introduced the launching of helium balloons with attached messages and the building and launching of model rockets in order to teach the students about aerodynamics, as well as wind direction and speeds at various altitudes. As a dedicated Home Teacher in the LDS Church, Paul enjoyed the families and friends he met during his visits with them. Paul was an avid fan of the Seattle Mariners, BYU sports and every team on which his grandson Kevin plays. Paul is survived by: his wife, Linda; four children: Lori Ann (Jeff) Chandler, Teresa Lynn (Tim) Owens, Susan Kaye Sager, and Edward Paul (Maria) Sager who was born on Paul's 28th birthday; five grandchildren: Tiffany, Cassanndre, Derek, Timothy and Kevin; and his brother, Howard Sager. An initial viewing will be held on Monday, December 1, 2008 from 5pm to 8pm at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98133. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2008, with a viewing starting at 3pm and services starting at 4pm at the LDS Church Harbour Pointe Building, 11001 Harbour Pointe Blvd., Mukilteo, WA 98275. Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 11am at the Provo City Cemetery, 610 S. State St., Provo, UT 84606. Condolences may be sent to: The Sager Family, 3119 Mukilteo Blvd., Everett, WA 98203.

Mr sager was my 5th grade teacher at Explorer. He was such a caring and kind man to all of his kids and especially to me. I was such a naive and shy kid, but really smart and gifted. Mr sager encouraged me to excell and was always happy to help. I just decided to Google his name and see if anything popped up, and saw this... I truly hope he got the life he deserved and knows how many little kids grew up to be good people with his help. I love and appreciate you Mr Sager!

I am so sorry for your loss. It is a great testament to his life as a teacher that so many of his students, myself included, have such fond memories of him. Mr. Sager, with that orange jacket, little orange truck and ready smile! He was truly a kind and caring person. You have much to be proud of.

I was sorry to hear of Mr. Sager's passing.
He was my 5th grade teacher his 1st year at Rosehill elementary.
I too still have the Christmas letter of how proud he was of my progress and talents. He also passed along his love of reading through the books he read to our class. I cherish the memories and friendships I made that year.
Mr. Sager was one of a kind and we were lucky to have a great teacher like him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.

I was extremely lucky to have had Paul Sager as a fifth grade student. I had him the first year Explorer opened. It was a crazy year due to the fact that the district decided to give "open school concept" a try. There were no walls between the classes and you could see a lot of things going on in other classrooms. Mr. Sager seemed to always keep a pretty cool head. There were a number of teachers that struggled. The Christmas Letter was something you never heard of a teacher taking the time to do. I talked to Paul about 8 years ago about that year and it was uncanny with what he could remember. Any student that had Mr. Sager was very lucky to have had such a caring teacher. I will always remember him as very caring and patient man. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

Expressing my condolences to the Sager Family....I worked with Mr. Sager at the library at Olivia Park back in the mid 90's. He taught me a lot and was incredible with the kids. He was a wonderful person.

Dear Sager Family,

I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Sager's passing. I was a student of his 28 years ago. This summer I celebrated my 20 year class reunion and I have to say that in reminiscing with fellow students, Mr. Sager's 5th grade class came up in topic. To this day I still have a Christmas letter he wrote me when I was in his 5th grade class at Explorer Elementary. At the time I remember thinking it was pretty cool to get a letter from your teacher. It turns out he had written letters to all his students. This wasn't just a short "have a great holiday" letter. He complimented me on things I was doing well in class and things that he wanted me to work on for the next year. He made it personal by mentioning my brother and sister. As an adult I always thought what a great teacher to spend that kind of time with each student. Just last week on my way home from visiting my mom in Mukilteo I passed by his house (or what used to be his house) on the boulevard and thought of him. Sager family, I just want you to know that Mr. Sager made a difference in my life and I'll always treasure my memories of him.
