Paul Stahler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 30, 2013.
Stahler, Paul Anthony, M.D. A resident of Jordan, MN, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones, at his home on June 28th at the age of 90. Paul Anthony Stahler was born to John and Martha (Lambert) Stahler on May 26th, 1923, in Morris, Minnesota. The seventh of eight children, he was raised on a farm in Chokio, MN and attended Alberta High School. After his sophomore year at St. John's University in Collegeville, Dr. Stahler left college in order to enlist in the U.S. Navy in 1942, after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He completed his college education at John Carroll University in Ohio. Dr. Stahler furthered his studies of medicine at Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1947. He completed his medical internship at Jersey City Medical Center in New Jersey and he did surgical residency in Wisconsin. While attending medical school at Marquette, Paul met and later married Dr. Elizabeth Rieschl. The couple came to Jordan in 1949, opening their medical practice on November 1st that same year. The couple raised nine children in Jordan. After practicing medicine in Jordan for 25 years, Dr. Stahler opened a new medical clinic in January, 1975. The Amo Vitae Clinic later became known as the Jordan Medical Clinic. Dr. Stahler practiced there until his retirement in 1985 after 36 years of being the Jordan physician. While in practice, Dr. Stahler served as the Scott County Coroner for 16 years. Throughout his life in Jordan, Dr. Stahler has been a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Jordan Commercial Club and the Scott-Carver Thresher's Association, where he had many friends. Dr. Stahler was always a great supporter of the Jordan community, attending to injured athletes at Jordan's high school sporting events, volunteering to do monthly blood pressure checks for Jordan senior citizens at the Schule House and teaching classes about life changes and religious education at the Catholic school. Dr. Stahler was passionate about traveling to state-wide churches to give his presentation on the suffering and crucifixion of Christ from a medical doctor's perspective. Dr. Stahler's other hobbies included raising miniature horses, pot-bellied pigs and St. Bernard's, making maple syrup, planting trees, camping, hunting, fishing and exploring the history of Native Americans in Minnesota. Dr. Stahler estimated planting between 1,500 and 2,000 pine trees in the Jordan area almost every year for 40 years. Dr. Stahler was very proud of the accomplishments that his children and grandchildren achieved -- many in medical or helping professions - including Dr. Paul A. Stahler II and Dr. Paul A. Stahler III. Dr. Stahler is survived by his children, Beth (Dick Pauly), Dr. Emilie Stahler, Barbara Stahler (Michael Richards), Dr. Paul (Sheila) Stahler, Ruth Stahler, Dr. Margaret Stahler, John Stahler, Carole Cole, Peter Stahler (Inga Schroeder); eleven grandsons, seven granddaughters, three great-granddaughters; brother-in-law, Robert Wolf and sister-in-law, Pat Rieschl. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Joseph; parents; three sisters, Martha Stahler, Ann Dorweiler, Jeanne Richards; brothers, Leonard, Lambert, Thomas, James and an infant brother, Jackie; brothers and sisters-in law. Pallbearers for Dr. Stahler will be grandchildren, Anne Pauly, Jameen Hudelson, Galen Richards, Barbara Kattar, Katie Stahler, and Alex Cole. Honorary pallbearer, Leonard Boetefuer. What a wonderful, kind man. I remember him coming out to our farm one evening to extract a squash seed out of my ear when I was a little boy. I guess it had started sprouting. Later he owned a farm down the road from ours and would give me a lift home in his beautiful Thunderbird if he saw me walking home after school. I haven't seen him since 1974, but have always thought of him very kindly.

Uncle Paul was a great man and a significant part of our family growing up. As a young girl I have many memories helping in small ways in the clinic in the back of our Drug Store. He was a clever fisherman at the cabin, the voice of reason when many cousins were together and a doctor with tremendous instincts. He taught me to hunt for mushrooms that were safe to eat, hunt for arrowheads and share his love animals. He gave me my first dog (Mollis) a beautiful St. Bernard. He delivered my oldest daughter. How lucky we were to have such a wonderful Uncle. Godspeed.

Dear family,
I remember our visits to you all at your farm in Jordan as a child. Uncle Paul was such a kind and warm person,, and my mom Geanne was so fond of her little brother. She told lots of stories about taking care of Paul and Uncle Jim when they were very small, and some later, more mischievous stories as they got older. I'm so sad that he's gone: the last of that generation: that leaves us as the elder generation now! Wish I could be with you all. But I'm with you in spirit. Love,
Your cousin Marti Richards Tom
