MELNYK, Pearl
(nee HOLOWAYCHUK)
November 23, 1919 - April 24, 2012
On April 24, 2012, Pearl Melnyk passed away peacefully, with her four loving daughters by her side.
Pearl is survived by her daughters: Pat (Greg Pidlaski), Louise (Dwight Barre), Margery (Brad Heuser), and Lorna (Keith Micetich); her six cherished grandchildren: Christina (Michael), Ben, Nick, Hayley (Cody), Laura and Anthony; her dear sisters Christine Tenove and Tillie Beamer; her sister-in-law Ann Bielby and brother-in-law Walter (Edna) Melnyk. Pearl was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, John Melnyk; by her sisters: Olga Antoniak, Mary Koroluk, Alice Jesten, and Anne Kinsman, and her brother Nick Holowaychuk.
Pearl loved each of her grandchildren without bounds and they adored her. She embraced their individual passions, their sports and their arts. Her patience, protection and guidance will be with them forever.
Pearl was a University of Alberta BSc. Nursing graduate. She will be remembered as the consummate caring professional nurse, whether as a young CNIB nurse driving across Northern Alberta, the nursing instructor at Lamont Archer Memorial Hospital, or the pioneering Diabetic Teaching Nurse at the UAH Metabolic Centre. Pearl brought her remarkable intelligence, leadership and cheerful optimism to her 50-year career.
A heartfelt thank-you to the incomparable Sheila Dompor for her loving and dedicated care and companionship. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Paul Grewal for his professional guidance and unfailing kindness. Thank you as well to Dr. Larratt for her supportive clarity and direction. We would also like to sincerely thank the caregivers and companions at the Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre who cared for Pearl over the past months.
By request, there will be no funeral. A private family memorial will take place at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Pearl to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Suite 100, 12220 Stony Plain Road, Edmonton, AB, T5N 3Y4 or [email protected] .

Dear Pat, Louise, Margery,Lorna and families,
Your mom was a treasure. Both mom and I loved when she came to visit with Aunt Anne to Lamont, but I was most grateful for her company at mom's appointments in Edmonton. She knew how to lighten the atmosphere with her great sense of humor. She was always able to make us laugh when we needed to most. I am very sorry for the loss of your mother and grandmother. You already know how special she was to all of you and all that loved her.
Sending you much love,
Sandra

Pat, Louise, Margery and Lorna:

I was so sorry to hear that Aunt Pearl passed away. I have fond memories of her, not only as an aunt, but as a nurse. My husbamd and I attended the diabetic clinic at the U of A a number of times. She was the respected authority! Such a strong, intelligent woman who worked so hard to educate patients so they could manage their illness. Talk about empowering! I know she passed on these qualities to her daughters - what a wonderful legacy.

Pat, Louise, Margery and Lorna and families,

Our sincerest condolences to you and your families on the loss of your mother and grandmother. While we cannot be with you at this time, I certainly have many fond memories of your mother who separately and together with her sisters and brother were an indomitable force in every sense of the word. She will be missed by all whose life she touched.

Sincerely,

Karen and Robert Danelesko
