Peter Rubel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 6, 2009.
FILLMORE, Calif. — Peter A. Rubel passed away peacefully on April 28, 2009, at his home in Fillmore, Calif. Peter was born on Aug. 22, 1914, in Zurich, Switzerland. After attending university in Switzerland, he continued his studies at Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business. He then worked for Rusch and Company in New York City where he met Elizabeth (Betty) Hunt.

They married in 1941, and raised their family in Greenwich, Conn., where they lived for 36 years. Peter was active on the boards of the Museum of Modern Art, in New York, and many other charitable and philanthropic organizations. The Rubels retired to Fillmore, Calif., in 1979, although Peter was involved with Rancho Camulos in Piru until his death.

Peter is survived by a brother, Hans Ulrich Rubel of Zurich, Switzerland; son and daughter-in-law Edward and Earline Rubel of Harwich Port; daughters Barbara Pratley of Greenwich, Conn., Susan Rubel of Maynard, and Liz Rubel of Santa Paula, Calif.; five grandsons; and three great-grandsons.

A memorial service celebrating Peter's long life will be held at Santa Paula Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2009.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Rancho Camulos Museum, P.O. Box 308, Piru, California, 93040, a National Historical Landmark owned by Rubel cousins, and the setting for the Helen Hunt Jackson novel "Home of Ramona."

To the family of Peter
I was happy to have known Peter. The last time I saw him was at Rancho Camulos on April 18th. Peter was such a nice man that when meeting him was like you have known him forever. I know this great man will be missed by his family and all that knew him. Peter is home free enjoying the everlasting life with his maker and the family and friends that have gone before him. God blesss you all.
