Peter Schuetz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 10, 2023.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Peter Frank Schuetz, a beloved member of our community. He peacefully departed from this earthly realm on November 6th, 2023, at the age of 87. Born on October 2nd, 1936, in Chicago, Peter's life was a testament to unwavering dedication and unwavering commitment.

Peter's journey was intertwined with that of his beloved wife, Joan, as they embarked on a remarkable adventure together. From their early years as undergraduates in Munich, Germany, they embraced the joys and challenges of raising their three children, Anna, Christian, and Daniel. Their love and devotion extended beyond their family, as they dedicated themselves to teaching the art of voice at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Through their guidance and mentorship, they inspired generations of students to pursue excellence in teaching, acting, and performing.

Peter possessed a captivating voice that resonated deeply with all who had the privilege of hearing it. Alongside Joan, he graced the stages of the Bloomington-Normal area, enchanting audiences with their harmonious melodies and evocative performances. Their home became a gathering place for friends, colleagues, and students, where the warmth of hospitality and the magic of music filled the air.

Beyond his musical talents, Peter found solace in the beauty of nature. His green thumb and nurturing spirit transformed his garden into a sanctuary of serenity, where he could quietly contemplate the wonders of the natural world. A skilled craftsman, he poured his heart into the construction of a breathtaking cabin in Whitefish, Montana, and dedicated himself to the meticulous restoration of their beloved home in the Maplewood neighborhood.

In honoring Peter's memory, a service was held at interment on Thursday, November 9th, 2023, at Scogin Hill Cemetery. Cremation rites were respectfully observed, allowing his spirit to find eternal peace. The family kindly requests that no charitable donations be made, as Peter's legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the melodies he inspired.

Peter's memory will forever be cherished by his devoted wife, Joan, his daughter, Anna , his sons, Christian (Paula) and Daniel (Jennifer), as well as his nephew, Christian Jr., and nieces Audrey and Emily. Their hearts are filled with the warmth of cherished moments and the enduring impact of Peter's teachings.

As we bid farewell to Peter Frank Schuetz, we find solace in the knowledge that his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he find eternal rest, and may his memory continue to inspire and uplift us all.

I'm so sorry to hear about Peter. Back in the mid-70s he guided me through my M.Mus. recital and it sometimes seems like only yesterday. Sincere condolences to Joan and all others who loved him. Will McGuffin

Peter was the best teacher I ever had, and later he became one of my favorite friends. He and Joan were always incredibly welcoming and kind to my family. I´m grateful to him for sharing his love for nature and music, and for introducing me Whitefish three decades ago. He was a really special person and will be missed.

In my minds eye I see Peter walking his beloved collie Lisel; upright, impeccably groomed and impossibly frail for such an endeavor but doing it with absolute dedication regardless of weather or road conditions. I see him worrying over Joan, holding her hand, encouraging her to eat the breakfast I'd made. I see him fretting over every shrub, tree or flower and inviting me out to see them and celebrate them while he reminisced about the overwhelming beauties of Montana. Peter talked about his wife, his children and his students and their accomplishments with pride. He told me Joan had a more beautiful voice than he did. Peter was fully engaged with Life, seeking beauty and creating beauty and fretting when it was destroyed. He cared deeply. It was a privilege to be there to help him in his declining years. He will be missed.

Peter was one of a kind. He always greeted everyone with a smile and asked about their lives. His baritone voice resonates loudly, whether on earth or no doubt in heaven.
