Petersen Jaegerman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 27 to Jan. 29, 2023.
On Tuesday, January 24, 2023, Petersen William Jaegerman, of New York City and Southampton, passed away. He was seventy-one. Born to Miriam Petersen and Edward Charles Jaegerman, he was the third of their six children. Petersen graduated from Bennington College with a bachelor of arts, majoring in French. He received his law degree from George Washington University Law School and was admitted to the bar in Washington, D.C., and New York. Petersen had a 20-year career in intellectual property law as Senior Vice President, Legal and Business Affairs with Peer Music of New York City. In 2011 he shifted focus and pursued licensure as a psychoanalyst from the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP) and maintained a private therapeutic practice thereafter. While living in Washington, DC, he met his life partner and future husband, Richard Stafford.

Petersen loved old movies, especially Alfred Hitchcock, and vocal jazz, including Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holliday and classic cars.

Petersen is survived by his husband, Richard, and his siblings, Karen Collins of Charlottesville, Virginia, Betsy Jaegerman of Harrington, Maine, Margaret Jaegerman of Brunswick, Maine, Alexander Jaegerman of Portland, Maine, and Anne Jaegerman of Washington, D.C., as well as his much-loved Boston Terrier, Ramsay. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who are able instead to make a donation to the Central Park Conservancy, (centralparknyc.org) or the NPAP (NPAP - National Psychological Association For Psychoanalysis).

I worked with Peter for years as his patient and he completely transformed my life. As a person in therapy we are blind to the details of our therapist´s life, except for those fragments which they share cautiously or otherwise escape unintentionally in the moments of casual exchange - like a biographical sketch of an obituary these moments of slippage contour what is otherwise felt but cannot be verbalized. To me, he was an immense person with a profoundly grounded empathy, despite the veil of his professional anonymity. Although I could not know Peter as a person in the world I nevertheless felt his presence and rapport as a source of deep comfort in our sessions. Peter could listen but he also could remember and interject in such beautiful ways. With the deepest gratitude, Alex Carver

So sorry to learn of the loss of my second cousin, Peter. I noticed his name was missing on the recent Illinois Farm correspondence. My thoughts and prayers to those of you surviving.

Just this past Friday, I unfolded a scroll -- a piece of paper tablecloth -- on which he wrote how best to navigate NPAP and the NYS licensing body. Kept in an unmarked folder, it magically fell into my hands and reminded me of his wisdom, his patience, and his generosity. Such a lovely man...

Peter was a lovely, gentle, thoughtful man. I loved traveling uptown on the train together after class; we routinely had interesting, rich discussions. I feel grateful to have known him and his patients were lucky to have been in his care. Love to Peter’s husband and to the others who will miss him.

I lost a friend and a colleague. So many wonderful memories of the years in training to become psychoanalysts, dinners at his and Richard's place, laughter, worries, support. Peter was generous and caring. I remain grateful for knowing him and calling him friend. Rest in peace.

My heart aches
I lost my brother to lung cancer before his time. The first of six siblings to leave us.
I know your pain. It eases with time but never leaves. Now there is 5.
