I was a nanny to the Roy kids the summer of 1979 at their home on St. Mary's Point. I remember Dr. Roy had a great love for orchids and would tenderly care for them, even with his busy schedule. He was a great husband and father and I know he will be missed greatly.

While I no longer live in the area, I was very saddened to learn of his death. I will keep you all in my prayers in the coming days.

Blessings,
Mary (Neeson) Kennedy

As a recent housekeeping assistant of Boutwell's Landing, I had the honor of keeping Dr. Phil's room clean and tidy. It was so nice to meet family members, and see you engage in your inspiring activities with Dr. Phil.

There was much more to it than just that...

Our family grew up having doctor Phil's father as our own family doctor along with doctor Hilker. My aunt was one of his father's nursing assistants.

Later, my sister Jean, became a nurse, and had the honor of knowing son, Dr. Phil.

My mother Mary (90), who is a current resident of Boutwell's Landing, living with Parkinsons and Dementia, recalls days gone by at the old Hamm Building with Drs. Roy and Hilker. Long-term memory is still with her.

May God Bless your family and give you peace and comfort.

Sincerely,
Mariann Johanneck

Dr. Roy was the surgeon for both of my folks in the late 1990s at St. John's. It was a scary time but they both loved him. So comforting to know you really like and trust your surgeon. My sympathies to you, his family.

I only knew Phil during his time at Wellstead, where he was in the unit with my late father, Jim. It was always such a pleasure and a joy to go see all the guys when I would visit my dad. Through conversations with Barb, I knew Phil as the family man, the doctor, the lover of the outdoors. But through the sparkle in his eyes and his tender touch with the adorable dogs, I knew Phil as a good, kind and fun loving man. Even with the Alzheimer's, I could see such great value in this part of his life in what he brought out in others. Barb, you were an extraordinary caretaker. When Phil moved away, we all missed the special touches you brought to the unit; the fresh flowers, the treats you set on the residents' plates to add to the appeal and, of course, the dogs! We missed Phil shuffling around, always so busy. I recall a time when a few staff were gathered in the kitchen area talking. Phil came along, joining the circle and putting an arm around the shoulders of each of the two alongside him. At this point, he rarely spoke, but I heard him utter "doctors, good morning." He nodded and flashed his kind smile. The man you all knew was still in there. The man I knew in the midst of Alzheimer's was remarkable, valuable and extremely lovable in his own right. And I could see that he was well loved in return.

I knew Dr. Roy in my early years of practice in St. Paul ~ he was affable & kind & had "a good set of hands". May he rest in peace forevermore.

Barbara
Your very nobel and honorable role of care giver is now over. Phil was blessed to have you. I know my sister Mary Ann thought very highly of both of you. While I did not know Phil well, I have enjoyed getting to know you. You are as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside. Take good care of yourself now. God Bless you,

Doctor Roy cared for me when I was a patient in the Burn Unit at Ramsey Hospital in the late 60's. I remember him as an energetic, kind and caring doctor, with the skill to cure my wound and return me to health.
My condolences to his family.

Phil and I were Kappa Sigs at Dartmouth and we were roommates our senior year. I'd followed his successful hockey career and learned to apprediate his calm, dry and caring approach to issues - so am not surprised that his medical patients and collegues discovered these traits. I was only able to sense them early in his professional development. But he was a very good man and a credit to the family and educational and work settings which contributed to his admirable qualities.

I was a patient of Dr. Roy's many years ago, when I had to have many cyst biopsies. I don't believe I ever met a kinder, more compassionate doctor, and his sense of humor was wonderful. My sympathies go out to his family and friends; I never forgot his wonderful abilities as a physician
that matched his unforgettable humanity.

Phil was an inspiration to me. I had no older brother, so I adopted him. He kept us entertained one of his college summers while staining our house. I followed him to college and onto the hockey team there. I am grateful to him for being that inspiration and for giving me the starting point to a great adventure.

I first met Phil when I was in nursing school at St. Paul Ramsey and was fortunate to know and work with him for many years. He was a great surgeon and was wonderful with his patients. I often saw how his kind, calm demeanor put patients at ease. He had a mischievous sense of humor and always had a smile. My deepest condolences.
