Philip A. Munroe, 85, of Galion, passed away Thursday evening, February 4, 2021, at his home. On December 13, 1935, Philip was born in Houlton, Maine, a son of the late Alfred and Fern (Shields) Munroe. He graduated from Hodgdon High School in the Class of 1954, where he was Valedictorian and played on the basketball team. Philip also graduated from MIT, where he studied electrical engineering and mathematics. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War from 1950-1953 and then served in the Air National Guard from 1953-1960. Philip married the love of his life, Joyce M. Walcher on April 1, 1960. They shared over 60 wonderful years together as husband and wife. Philip worked at General Electric and then worked most of his career at the Federal Aviation Administration in Oberlin. It was there that he worked as an air traffic controller and later as a computer technician. He retired after 33 years in January 1991. Philip enjoyed officiating basketball and soccer. He was a member of the Elyria Community Church of the Nazarene, where he served faithfully as an usher, officiated Upward basketball, Promise Keepers coordinator and helped with the Heaventrain ministry. He enjoyed researching family history and was pleased to discover that he was a direct descendant of the Mayflower. Philip is survived by his wife, Joyce; son, Philip (Pam) Munroe; daughters, Melissa (Mark) Deems and Traci Munroe; grandchildren, Bethany (Christopher) Peterson, Kelsey (Alex) Ruple, Jenae Whitehead, Kaeli Tracht, Andrea Munroe, Alex (Allyssa) Deems and Amanda Deems; great-grandchildren, Wesley Philip Peterson, Sullivan Deems and Nolan Deems and brother, Floyd Munroe.
