Philip Pugh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 28, 2025.
Philip Pugh of Timonium, MD, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2025 at the age of 86. He was the son of William and Edna Price Pugh, and brother of Patrick J. Pugh. He is survived by sister-in- law, Joan Eustace Pugh, nephew, Justin Pugh and grand-nephew, Sawyer Pugh. He was born on January 3, 1939 and lived on South Pulaski St. in Baltimore City. Attended the William S. Baer School of Baltimore. After his mother passed away in 1968, he lived with his brother, Patrick and family in Joppatowne from 1968-2000. For the past 25 years, he lived at Stella Maris Nursing Home and received loving care from the staff.

Having been brain injured during birth which resulted in Cerebral Palsy, Philip was unable to walk or articulate his speech. However, his cognitive abilities were not injured and he was creative and above-average intelligent. He designed adaptations for his vehicles. Early communication was done by typing with his nose on an electric typewriter. This resulted in severe damage to his upper spine and neck. During a surgery to stabilize his neck he had a stroke which took away his use of the right arm. When he received a computer, he was able to again type messages using a screen keyboard, a right hand joystick and a clicker pad that was under the desk that he would push with his knee for each letter. Beside communication, the computer also offered the news and entertainment and a way to stay in touch with friends.

Philip's greatest joy was driving his Joppatowne community-donated electric golfcart around the town and later driving the electric wheelchair around the campus of Stella Maris. Having the golfcart allowed Philip to also participate in activities, hangout at the marina and joke with his many friends. He was elected the Grand Marshall of the Joppatowne 4th of July Parade.

Each summer he looked forward to the week spent at Camp Greentop. Recently, he composed an essay describing the cherished times he annually had. His essay has been published in the book entitled, CAMP GREENTOP: OUR FAVORITE YEAR.

Philip was an avid fan of Old Time country and Blue Grass music. Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, and Loretta Lynne were among his favorites. He had a massive collection of tapes, records and CD's from the 1940's to the 1960's.

As a resident of Stella Maris Nursing Home for 25 years, he learned how to use an electric wheelchair. He was allowed to travel throughout the building and the campus, making friends of the staff and appreciating the beauty of the landscape. Much of his time was spent listening to his music, watching TV and corresponding on his computer. He cherished the friends and family members who visited and brought him his special treats from the outside. The staff adopted and loved Philip and treated him like a family member for the 25 years he lived with them.

Philip was a role model to us all in how to adapt to hardship and live life to the best that God provided.

Philip was our neighbor and friend for 30 years when he lived with Pat and Joan in Joppa Towne. Our children loved him. Though older he blended in with their ages. He was at our house often as I would "fix" issues with his carts. His knowledge of country music and "things" in general was amazing.

Philips legacy is one of the human spirit and will and what can be overcome and accomplished. He will remain an inspiration to any who came to know him.
