Philip Swartzell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 10, 2025.
Philip David Swartzell, affectionately known as Phil, Boyah to his brother, and "Link" to his high school friends, passed away on March 19, 2025, in Everett, Washington, at the age of 85. In recent years, he faced challenges with COPD and Alzheimer's, with complications from COPD contributing to his passing.

Phil was born on September 11, 1939, in Cut Bank, Montana. In the early 1940s, he moved with his parents and brother to Seattle, where he grew up in the Rainier Valley neighborhood. He attended Franklin High School, where he played center on the football team and competed in shot put for the track team. He graduated in 1957, a year marked by the passing of his father. After high school, he briefly attended Central Washington University and the University of Washington.

In 1960, Phil met Kaye Jean Graves, the woman who would become his lifelong partner. They married on September 23, 1961, and together built a loving family with their three children: Kellee, Steven, and Paul.

Phil had a long and accomplished career as a journeyman sign painter and business owner. He began his career at Messenger Sign Company as an apprentice before becoming a full journeyman. In 1977, he opened his own sign shop, Apollo Letters & Lettering in Edmonds, Washington. He was well known for his handmade raised letters and expertise in lettering boats-both commercial and pleasure vessels. He was also a proud member of the Local 1094 Sign Painters Union for 43 years.

Beyond his professional life, Phil had a deep love for art and nature. He enjoyed painting and drawing throughout his life. A lifelong fisherman, he found joy in outdoor adventures such as camping, hiking, and hunting in his younger years. Later in life, he cherished time spent with family and friends above all else.

He is survived by his beloved wife of over six decades, Kaye; their children Kellee Ellis (Harry), Steven Swartzell (Tammy), and Paul Swartzell; as well as four grandchildren: Randy, Mike (Kim), Kaz, and Mitch. He was predeceased by his parents, Orlan "Red" Swartzell and Flora Moeller (née Robertson), and his brother Mark.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Phil's life will be held on May 18, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Edmonds Waterfront Center (220 Railroad Ave., Edmonds, WA 98020). Lunch will be provided.

Phil's memory will live on through the stories shared by those who knew him best. His legacy of craftsmanship, humor, and love for family will not be forgotten.

The family will be having a private internment ceremony. A celebration of life will be held at the Edmonds Waterfront Center on Sunday, May 18th, 2025 from 11:00AM-2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate if you could make a donation to the Washington chapter of the Alzheimer's Association in Phil's name. https://g.co/kgs/6BGAjnb

My late husband Fred grew up with Phil and his brother Mark and they spent their younger years fishing and hunting together. I met both Phil and my husband my freshman year at Franklin High School and we were all close friends from that time forward. Phil and Mark were both in our wedding in 1957 and Fred was in Kaye and Phil´s wedding in 1961. We spent many wonderful years as couples fishing, playing cards and having dinner in each other homes, and those memories will be with me forever. I know that Fred and Mark, along with their good friend Bill Fox, were all there to welcome Phil when he arrived in Heaven. Rest in peace dear friend.

I will miss Phil. He was funny, smart, and honest as the day is long. The world needs more people like Phil.
