Phyllis Lewis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2023.
Loving mother and grandmother, Phyllis June (Stateler) Lewis, 83, of Indianapolis, IN unexpectedly passed away on July 4, 2023 while on vacation in Lajitas, TX. She was born on November 1, 1939 in Spencer County, IN to the late Paul and Emma Stateler.

Phyllis was a loving and caring woman, always giving her time to others. In her 40 year career as a Registered Nurse, she practiced in all areas of medicine and retired from Methodist Hospital in Merrillville, IN as the Director of the Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Detox Program. When she wasn't caring for others, she enjoyed working in her garden, playing cards with friends, sewing her next project, serving on her local HOA board and talking politics. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her grandchildren. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, partner and friend filled with generosity, kindness and love.

Phyllis is survived by her high school sweetheart, Byron Batteiger; two daughters Paula Maloian of Bloomington, IN and Robin MacDougall of Fishers, IN; six grandchildren, Kayla (Tony) DeVito of Bedford, IN, Jacob Maloian of Highland, IN, Joshua Maloian of Bremerton, WA, and Georgia, Charlotte, Calvin MacDougall of Fishers, IN; and brother Ken Stateler of Valrico, FL.

A memorial service will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church in Boonville, IN on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 11:00am. A burial for the immediate family will be held at Hackleman Cemetery in Chrisney, IN.

Memorial contributions can be made to The Paul and Emma Stateler Camping Scholarship at Main Street United Methodist Church, 222 E Main Street, Boonville, IN 47601. This is a scholarship fund Phyllis created in honor of her parents which provides financial assistance for youth to attend church camp.

Phyllis was a treasure for our condo association, a friend to all, and was willing to contribute wherever she was needed. We will truly miss her.

I share so many memories with Phyllis including the time we joined the Main Street Methodist Church at age 10. Her whole family was a blessing to me. My condolences to you all.

I only had the pleasure of knowing this kind lady for a little over 5 years but she was like a sister to me. I knew I could call her any time of the night or day and we could talk about anything. If I was happy, she shared my happiness, if I wanted to smack someone, she talked me off the ledge....

She truly loved her daughters and grandkids, (she loved attending their activities) and, of course, Byron.

I never heard her say an unkind thing about anyone and she is truly missed.
