Portia,
You will trully be missed. I still feel your presence jogging thru the nieghborhood, smilling and waving as I passed you on Hackney. I remember the smiles, laughs and talks we shared at the games with our girls who grew up together. You were compassionate, warm and an inspiration to my girls and I. Thank You for being a part of our lives.

I am a former DOC employee and came to know Portia quite well. She loved life, enjoyed laughter, and had a general love for all. I was shocked and sadded with disbeleif when I heard of her passing. To her husband, children and family I send my deepest and sincerest condolences. Portia and I enjoyed a few fun times together and many laughs and conversations. May you find comfort in knowing that God is a God of love and he does not give us more that we can bare. Cast your burdens upon him and he will help you through the difficult days ahead. Continue to praise God and give him all the glory because we know in his word he has promised that weeping may endure for a night but, PRAISE GOD, joy comes in the morning and we pray we will see our dear sister in the first resurrection when Jesus returns to take all of his children home!!
Blessings, love and prayers to you all.

Coach portia's family,
I loved coach Portia so much even though I only knew her for a couple of months. This was my first aau team and I am so happy I could spend it with her. She has taught me everything and more. She has taught me things about basketball like how you can not play unless you have the heart. She has taught me things about life that I will always remember. Things like how if you can't hold your head up high than there is no one who will take you as a person who can stand there ground and can do anything if they put there mind to it. She has givein me a coach that I will never be able to forget. I loved couch Portia and I am so sorry to all of you.

Charismatic and energetic. That was Portia. Anyone meeting her was not likely to forget her. It is hard to grasp the concept that someone so full of life is no longer with us. She was such fun and often talked about her sports activities, her family, her parents and her spirituality.
I want to reiterate to her family what they already know, Portia was an exceptional and unique person who was well liked, generous of spirit, and much admired.
Remember that the Scriptures teach us that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. I pray that you will take comfort in the promise of eternal life and know that you will be with Portia again.

To Coach Portia's Family,
I am praying for you in your time of need. If you need anything you just let me know. Coach Portia was my coach for 5 months but i have known her since i was 10 or 11 and i am now 15. Even when she was wasn't my offical coach she still showed me things and taught me things that i needed to know for basketball. I have gotten closer to her this year and everyone expected us to hate each other; lol:D she even thought we were going to butt heads but we didnt as much as we thought we were going to; Just a couple of times. I have learned many things from her basketball wise and even about life. She is a very nice person and she didn't care what anyone thought about her as long as she was happy and comftorable. i love her soo much and nothing will ever change that otherwise. Some things in life i don't understand and i wish she was still here on Earth to help me with them but she is in my heart and i know she will still help me as best as she can. We would talk on the phone for hours about everything and she was a happy person all the time unless we didn't run like she was wanted us too. :) When i'm sad and i think about her and cry i just think that she is in Heaven with God coaching another basketball team like she loved doing. She taught me how i should treat my mom and all the way to how i should shoot a basketball. All my accomplishments for basketball i give to her because without her i wouldn't even know what to do. I'm honestly glad that she was my coach this year and i would never change the experience for anything.
i love you Coach Portia.
"be true to yourself"
and
"i don't care what people think of me because i know i am beautiful and that's all that matters."
-Coach Portia
Those are two things she said to me that i will never forget.!

To Chris and ALL of Portia's beautiful children,
We would be remiss not to acknowledge the indelible mark Portia left on the Hopkins "Bobcat" Athletic Association during her tenure coaching cheerleading here. She was a trailblazer in the uncanning way she was able to encourage, develop and DISCIPLINE the young ladies at Hopkins. We know, because she so often mentioned, that she will always be a Bobcat. We take comfort in knowing that she's "rockin' the Black & Orange" in the Kingdom. We pray that you and your children take comfort in knowing that she touched the lives and hearts of so many.
We love you Portia

To the Smith Family ~
Joy cometh in the morning. I know your hearts are heavy with sadness but know that God is faithful to his word he will not leave nor forsake you he is right beside you. Portia was one of a kind, she touched so many people in so many ways, always a smile on her face, stilletos on, fashions only she could pull off and you didn't know weather she would have a long, short, straight or curly hair style but whatever she had on she always wore that smile.
Let's remember Portia by celebrating her life because if you knew Portia you knew she loved life and enjoyed life to it's fullest. When Portia and I would talk I would always say to her "When I grow up I am going to be just like YOU"(even though I was a senior to her)and she would laugh and say if I tried hard enough I could be just like her. I say rest in Peace my sister and we will see you again. May the family also find comfort and peace in knowing that this is a temporary
seperation beacause we will see her again.

As the glass doors opened, out came Portia--"stepping galore." Upon meeting and passing her on the red brick walkway @ VADOC Atmore, I would often laugh and say, "go girl" because you are wearing those shoes or otherwise compliment on whatever the fashion outfit. Remembering her smiles and statuesque walk, I am going to miss her sadly.

Portia made an impact everywhere she went and touched every heart she came in contact with. She was a great friend, neighbor, co-worker, and I know a great mom because her children were life to her! We love you and our prayers are with your family.

My condolences to the family at this difficult time. I am going to miss my friend. Portia and I worked together and after I left for another agency she continued to be a good friend.
