Preston Hayes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 5, 2019.
Preston Hayes, Chemistry Teacher, of Glenview passed away at home on August 19, 2019. Born in Greeneville, Tennessee, he grew up on the family's farm where he learned the value of hard work and persistence, qualities he exemplified throughout his life.

Upon graduation from the University of Tennessee he joined the newly formed Peace Corps in the Philippines where he introduced a lab-based Chemistry curriculum for the first time. This belief in the critical importance of scientific inquiry guided his teaching throughout his 40 year teaching career, first at Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center until 1988 and subsequently at Glenbrook South until his retirement in 2007. Preston actively participated in the broader science community, offering workshops, attending conferences and serving on a committee to prepare a national Chemistry exam.

While many of his students won awards and scholarships in state and national competitions, he was proud of the accomplishments of all of his students. He, too, was the recipient of numerous accolades, including as a Lincoln Land Legend and as the 2006 Distinguished Teacher at Glenbrook South. However, what delighted him most were the notes he received from students, sometimes many years later, acknowledging his impact on their lives.

Preston and his wife, Judy raised their family in Glenview. Nothing made him happier than to spend time with his two children, Brian and Kristin. He devoted his retirement years to extensive travel, working in his beloved garden and becoming a whiz at genealogy. He is survived by his wife of 49 years and his children, Brian and Kristin, both of Washington, D.C. A celebration of his life will be held at the Glenview Community Church at 2:30 on September 22.

I had Mr. Hayes for Chem-Phys at Glenbrook South. He was very inspiring to say the least! He would challenge us to go the extra mile and think outside the box. His teaching style was very engaging by calling on us, which made us think on the spur of the moment. Being his lab assistant showed me that he never stopped teaching/sharing knowledge. He encouraged and supported me to take Chemistry AP while still finishing 2nd half of the Chem-Phys program.
We kept in touch even after my graduation from GBS. Our conversations matured along the various stages of my career. I can’t thank Mr. Hayes enough for taking me under his wings and putting me through the challenges that made me ready for college, and really Life in general.
Mr. Hayes – May Your Soul Rest in Peace to know you have transformed so many students’ lives in great ways!

I owe so much to this man, my high school chemistry teacher Preston T. Hayes. He was that One Special Teacher who helped it all make sense and pushed my\e on my way. Also a very special friend and inspiration. His encouragement and recommendation letter got me into Northwestern a year early, and from there grew an academic career with adventures too numerous to recount. I write tonight in gratitude and recognition of his impact, as an career-long Alzheimer's disease researcher and a professorship in neurology at Johns Hopkins University. He did that - he lit that flame. That's the kind of thing he would do. I was a photographer and business manager on our high school year book and took out an ad in the back, with a photo of him grinning over beaker smoking with some chemical reaction we conjured up. Everyone in the class contributed a few dollars to pay for the ad, with a caption I wrote reading, "regardless of our future professions, we hope we are as good at ours as he is at his." I don't think I ever was - he was so special.

My first memory of Mr. Hayes was how quickly and perfectly he wrote across the blackboard. He could write formulas on the blackboard more quickly than we could copy his text into our notebooks, and with absolutely perfect penmanship. You could take his blackboard writing and copy it directly into a textbook, it was that perfect.

I still remember exchanging eyerolls and headshakes with my classmates on that first day of class.

But he was far more than just a great chemistry teacher. He was a very hard working, very smart and dedicated professional, traits that he exemplified routinely.

Beyond that, he was a role model and inspired many of his students to achievements they may not have made otherwise. He touched many lives.

Tina Turner was wrong. In this day and age particularly, we need roles models and heroes. Mr Hayes was certainly my hero.

Mr. Hayes, we love you and we will miss you.

I knew Preston in grad school at Northwestern in a program for returned PCVs to get teaching licences. I have been forever grateful to him for getting me through statistics in the days before calculators never mind computers. We lost touch after grad school. I thought he was going back to Tenn. I'm sure he was a great teacher and know he was a lovely human being. I'm sure he will be missed by those close to him.

I am so thankful for Preston's life. He and Judy welcomed me into their home during my graduate school years! What started as a semester stay turned into 2 1/2 years of living with them! Preston was kind, helpful, and considerate as I lived with them. His love to learn and share his knowledge could be seen in his passion for travel, chemistry, hard work and knowledge. I am grateful for Preston and the time I was able to live in his home!

As friends of Preston and his wife Judy from long ago, we had enjoyed only infrequent and brief visits with them since our days in grad school at Northwestern. Those visits included delightful tours of their gardens and stimulating, fun conversations about teaching, chemistry and family. Preston will fondly be remembered by us for his wit, knowledge, love of teaching and learning, curiosity, passion for excellence and sincerity. Though our interaction with Preston was infrequent in recent years, we will miss his friendship. Sincerely, Judy and Lee Krug
