Pryne Fields Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 8 to Nov. 9, 2006.

Jan. 29, 1910 - Nov. 4, 2006

A memorial service for Pryne Fields, 96, of North Bend, will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2175 Newmark Ave., in Coos Bay. Pastor Don Gladden will officiate. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to noon at the church.

Pryne was born Jan. 29, 1910, in Arkansas, to Pryne and Martha (Brandenberg) Fields. He died Nov. 4, 2006, in Bandon.

He was born before automobiles and airplanes were invented. When he was only 4 years old, his parents died and he went to live with his 15-year-old sister and her husband in California. When he was 15, Pryne jumped a train with one of his friends and traveled all over the West. Back then, Pryne worked ranches, rodeos, mills, mines, railroads, oil fields and, for a short time, he even worked for a circus. Later, he worked for the railroad and the Oregon State Highway Department. He also worked on the construction of the McCullough Bridge, and finally finished his working career as a local longshoreman.

Pryne was a storyteller with a very interesting life. At times, he would choke up and say, "I wouldn't trade any of my experiences for the world." Oftentimes he shared stories about local history. Pryne knew Capt. Simpson well. He could recall seeing the three tall ships come in and he remembered Capt. Simpson when he dedicated the building and garden estates, which are now known as the Shore Acres State Park. He also talked about the time when Coos Bay was called Marshfield and the streets and roads were built on planks and how he worked on Kaiser ships during World War II.

Pryne enjoyed comparing days of the 1930s with life in the present with Grandma Finch, a good Christian friend and extended family member.

His family and friends are truly blessed to have had him with them for so long. He will be dearly missed.

Arrangements are under the direction of Myrtle Grove Funeral Service-Bay Area, 269-2851.

I have lived across the way from Mr.Fields and his late wife Mary since I was 5 years old and have really enjoyed them as neighbors. My sisters and I used to come by and say hi a lot and Mary used to come visit our grandma Johnson and Aunt Hannah every day.I have ran into Mr Fields when he would come into the flower shop I work at and order flowers for his niece Tammy (I think) who was in pagents he was so happy to send her flowers through me and it was always nice to see him.He will be missed but now he can be with his wife Mary and that makes me feel good for them both.
