Rand Skolnick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 8 to Jul. 9, 2008.
SKOLNICK--Rand Harlan, passed away peacefully at his summer home in New Hope, PA on July 4th, 2008. Surrounded by his longtime partner Terrence Meck and family, Rand succumbed to his battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 50 years old. Throughout his life Rand worked diligently in the health food industry building his family business, Solgar Vitamin and Herb Company into a household name for those who demanded integrity and high quality in nutrasutical. He will be remembered as a wonderful son and brother, loving husband, honest businessman and great friend to so many. Most of all, he will always be remembered for his ability to remain humble throughout his all too short life. From the beginning of his career until his death, Rand was an avid philanthropist. In the end, people were Rand's greatest joy. Services were held at Riverside Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rand's Foundation, The Palette Fund at P.O. Box 865, Lynbrook, NY, 11563.

I find it very interesting to get this reminder today of Rand's passing as he came to mind seemingly out of the blue just a couple of days ago. So this tells me that he has not left us .
He is still here in spirit reminding us of his caring nature and life well lived.

I have had two dreams about Rand recently.

He looked wonderful, young and in the first dream was beating off adoring fans and I was his bouncer.

Was lovely seeing him again even if it was only in my dreams.....

I had just heard that Rand died last July 4th and my heart and condolences goes out to his family. I had the pleasure of working for and with Rand when I was the credit and collections manager. He was an excellent boss to work for and found him to be a good person.

Dear Rand's parents,

I've shared so, so many good times with Rand over 28 years, including the High Holidays at your home on Long Island.

He was a great friend, teacher, mentor. Younger than I, but so much wiser, smarter, more loving.

I really loved him.

Rand and I met in 1990, we became good friends and spent some fine times together. Although we both travelled in our respective lives, there was always the telephone and we would spend hours on long distance calls. I shared time with Rand and his family too. Rand knew my daughters, making our connection and conversations more special - I have a pure uncomplicated love for Rand.

I only learned yesterday of Rand's passing and I am deeply saddened. Rand was a brilliant human being, smart, kind, talented, a handsome man in every way.

You will always be in my heart

Dear Rand

All my Love, Nikki.

Recently I have heard that Rand Skolnick did pass away. First my condolences to you and the whole Solgar family of course. I really felt sad when I did notice because I didn’t know he did pass away and so young of course. I did introduce with Rand Skolnick in 1986 the Solgarproduct line in the Netherlands with quite a lot of success. I did appreciate his thoughts, his hard work, his loyalty, and his commitment and above all his honesty. We were really close friends once we met and this will always be until eternity. I will never forget him and may he rest in piece. So long my dear friend!! Maikel Broekhuys

I am still in the possession of a very nice picture made at the London Heathrow airport made in 1986 but I can not exactly recall the year. A picture of Rand, Malcolm My brother and I.

I am not quite sure if Conny is still alive and I am sure that she or one of his brothers would like to receive this photograph. I feel, at least what I can still do for Connie or one of his family members is to offer you this photograph to remember him how he was!!

Please let me know your feelings about receiving this picture (photograph)

You will be deeply missed, not only for Solgar , but for all people that were so fortune to have known you.

I was so fortunate to meet Rand as a young man during school days in Ohio. His gentleness, kindness, and strength were an inspiration and example to me throughout my life. The smallest, simplest things he would do could enlighten me. The person he admired most was his father, and he was truly his father’s son, for many admired him. Though I haven’t seen him since his days at Emory I often thought of him. I was grieved by the news of his illness…I must have loved him very much.

Working on Allen & Connie's behalf for over 15 years I only met Rand on a few occasions, and briefly at that.
That said - he was bright, confident and purposeful in our sporadic encounters and from all I heard and read, held in the highest regard by those that knew him, personally as well as professionally.
Most importantly, his family thought even more of him and given my regard for his parents, that speaks volumes for the type of person we have lost so prematurely.
Please accept my most sincere condolonces on your loss. My prayers are and have been with you.

A great light that reached into the dark to help the world see that humanity is possible for all to achieve. His generosity and vision not only helped those in need , but encouraged others to help others and to make this world a better place. Just when I was starting to know him; I was proud to call him friend. He will be missed by all of us. Terrence, you were his light and only made him shine brighter. I never met Rand but having read all the comments about him here and elsewhere since his passing I can only say that he may no longer be with us but his drive, energy, compassion and spirit will live on through what he achieved during his lifetime and the work that those he has left behind will now do on his behalf.

Someone with so much positivity during their lifetime will surely influence us all over the coming years!

To all who knew and loved Rand;
Every now and again we are privileged to meet someone who positively inspires and encourages us, whose outlook on life and to other people is worthy of emulating and we know Rand was such a person. He taught me my work ethic and showed us all what teamwork was about, yet always asked after my family and treating me as more than a Solgar employee. Those wonderful characteristics flowed down from the top to all of us and while we will miss him dearly we will each ensure that his legacy will be continued in his absence.
To Mr & Mrs Skolnick, my deepest & heartfelt sympathies at the loss of a cherished son & I pray that these guest book messages of condolence will help your hearts will heal quickly. To Terence, tremendous respect for his strength & care for Rand during a painful time and the final loss of someone so dear to him.
I am praying that God will give you all rest and peace in Him.

Rand's passion and vision in everything he did rubbed off on everyone he met. If you were ever feeling down, one conversation with Rand would invigorate you, motivate you and most importantly put a smile back on your face. Spending time with Rand would always be memorable and these special memories will live with me forever.
I'm just sorry Rand never got to meet Heather-May, but if I as a parent can install half the passion and life values in her that Rand taught me then I'll have done well.
I'll miss you mate.

Dear Connie & Allen

I was so sad to hear of the passing of your precious son. I hope you will find some small comfort in knowing how much Rand was loved by so many people. My earliest memories of Rand are when he had just flown in via Concorde to visit Tring. He would stop off at the local bakers, buy cakes for the everyone and leave them on the reception desk. This speaks volumes about the man. Rand was a credit to you. He was also a wonderful employer. It was a privilege to have been touched by his spirit. May your faith heal your pain and give you comfort.

I have had the honor of serving with Rand on the Bailey House Board of Directors for the last 4 years and prior to that knowing him through my work on our annual auction, from its inception 20 years ago.
To say that we in the Bailey House family are at a loss as to how we can face the future without his tireless advocacy and loving, vibrant presence is an understatement.
But thanks to the very example Rand gave us again and again, in so many ways, for so many years, I know we will and I know he would have it no other way.
I am grateful for his inspiration and for the opportunity to have served with him.

Whilst I haven't seen Rand for twelve years, there are some people you can't forget! During those first years at Solgar UK, Rand's visits were the highlight of our working life. He would arrive like a fireball of enthusiasm, passion and drive. The consumate business man, he knew how to inspire and lead.

Mr and Mrs Skolnick, you probably don't remember the girl who helped ship those beautiful oak hall chairs to you. A parent now herself, she cannot begin to understand how you are feeling. No parent should ever have to lose a child and I send you my heartfelt condolences.

Rand brought all of his heart, love, support and vision to the youth of Bucks County through his support of Planned Parenthood's Rainbow Room. He would be so excited to talk about the latest happenings for the youth, always asking questions and offering ideas. The Rainbow Room was started in 2002 as Bucks County's first and only center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning youth and allies - and Rand was a tireless supporter - always coming forward, hosting pool parties at The Raven, and ultimately offering a building on his propoerty for a vision of expansion and Home. He kept politics out of his support and is a role model and eternal ally to the many youth and staff whose lives he touched.

Terrence - we love you and have always felt your support right along with Rand's.

With love and peace,

I have known Rand for over a decade and a half and ran into him mostly at natural food shows. We always said we would get together on South Beach but iroically, Life and plans always got in the way...... I just learned that we should follow up with these plans because before you know it, they may no longer be possible. Although I worked for Solgar's friendly competition, there hadn't been a time where Rand didn't embrace me with a giant hug or insist upon sharing a cab to return to our respective hotels. His smile always touched my heart and his authenticity was overwhelming. Although I do not know Terrence or Connie and Allen, my heart reaches out to you all. We are all so blessed to have known and to have had such a gift cross our paths in Rand and somewhere perhaps in a better place he is bringing that to wherever he is now. I still will think of him as the most "handsome" and "charasmatic" and "kind" soul one could ever have the pleasure of meeting and I often joked with him of that and naturally, his modesty, superseded the compliments and were always replaced with a chuckle. I hope there was no suffering involved in his final days and although he is not here with us he will never ever be forgotten.

A part of me has gone quiet, now that the dynamo that was Rand is no longer here. I will miss his energy, affection, kindness and hugs. My heart goes out to those closest to him, as it is hard enough for us who saw him less frequently. Rand, 16 years of knowing you seems all too short. x

I was greatly saddended to hear of Rand's passing. It is a heavy blow to anyone in our industry, but particularly so to anyone who had the good fortune to work with him in Solgar and get to know him on a personal level. Please accept our deepest sympathies for the great loss of your son Rand.

When we heard the news we were shocked and could simply not believe what had happened. Rand was our good friend with a fascinating personality. His commitment to all people he knew and who worked with him was one of a kind. We were so happy seeing him back at Solgar with all his enthusiasm and creative power.

He was a person we will remember as long as we live as he made a remarkable change to our life. We remember very well his visit here in Germany.

I have just returned from Rand’s fitting memorial on Monday and it still seems surreal.

Having been a part of the Solgar global family in the UK for 12 years, I found Rand to be a great mentor. His business ethics were not reflective of an ordinary businessman, but those of a humanitarian. People were always more important to Rand than figures.

I have many great memories of Rand; one being the precious time I spent with him in May 2006 during my trip to the US. He made me feel such a part of his future plans. That is always the sign of a wonderful boss. The stories of his childhood and his moves on the dance floor were proof to me that he was more than just a boss.

It is hard right now to think of driving forward without Rand at the wheel. But his vision will help navigate us to continue making his dreams a reality.

To Connie and Allen: Rand is a great credit to you as individuals and as parents. May your strong family bond help you cope through this difficult and sad time.

To Terrence: we look forward to seeing you again in London next month for the memorial service.

Love to the entire Skolnick family, Terrence and all who miss him.

Rand brought his vision and indefatigable energy to the town of New Hope, PA where we reside. He beautifully transformed, with Terrence, several establishments which we patronize and very much enjoy. He was also very active in philantropic events in town. We especially remember the fund raiser held at the Raven for the people affected by the floods that impacted New Hope. Rand will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with Terrence and the rest of his family.

I knew Rand only as a patron of his establishments, The Raven and more recently The Nevermore, in New Hope, PA. It was always a pleasure to see him and speak with him as I did briefly on several occasions. Such a warm and genuine man! My fondest memory is of stopping to thank him for the delightful New Year's Eve my partner and I and friends had enjoyed this past January at the Nevermore. Rand smiled his winning smile and insisted on getting up from his seat to thank me personally for my compliments on the place and to give me a warm embrace. I smile when I think of him.

My deepest condolences to the Skolnick family and to Terrence. Rand was truly a remarkable person and his presence will be missed in New Hope.

As one of the first employees of Solgar, UK, I had the pleasure of working with Rand from around 1989. His passion was infectious, his vision, unfaultering. I soon realised that Rand would be far more than your average boss, and grew to know him more as an extended family member. Rand - My dear friend

God looked around his garden & found an empty place.
He then looked down upon the earth & saw your tired face.

He put his arms around you & lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would never get well on earth again.

He saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb, so he closed your weary eyelids & whispered "Peace Be Thine".

It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn't go alone, for part of us went with you, the day God called you home.

God Bless xxx

As a Solgar employee, I remember the first time I met Rand at a holiday party. He came up to me while I was sitting at a table with some coworkers, just simply fixed my tie, adjusted my collar, and then introduced himself, and we sat and talked for about 5 minutes. From that point on, I always made sure to wear a tie in his presence (god forbid!), and always yelled at him when he didn't do the same. The hugs were always genuine, the comments, advice, guidance all were always sincere. In only a handful of meetings or dinners or conferences, I learned enough about Rand to know that I wanted to learn more. He was my CEO, but never my superior; he would not allow that. He was a great, great man, a great leader, and a great role model, as we all can attest to. His mark has been left, and everyone in his Solgar family feels this. Thank you for everything Rand.

I send my deepest sympathies to the both of you and your family. I met Rand back in the "Disco Era" in the late 70's. He was an amazing man, I feel very lucky to have known him during our "wild years" and then to see him grow with Solgar. I remember when it started out on LI and he was living in Rockville Centre, then to the city apartments and of course the beautiful home in FLA. Over the past 10 years we did not see or speak often but through mutual friends (We did a lot of six degrees of Rand Skolnick ;-) )we kept track of each other.
I remember a birthday party in the city and how we laughed about how long we go back and how when we did see each other it was like yesterday. He was so welcoming when he met my partner Jerry too.
He was very special. When he spoke with you he was with you and did not let anything interfere with that.
Again I feel honored to have known him and had his friendship. I am very saddened by his passing but will always remember his great friendly smile.

Sincerely,
Craig Thomashauer & Jerry Dellova

Our deepest condolences to Alan, Connie, Mitch and Barry for the terrible loss of your beautiful son and brother. Our prayers are with your family and with Terrance. May you find peace during this difficult time.

I met Rand 20 years ago when my brother, Michael DaBoin, invited Rand to our home in Atlanta to introduce him to our family. We welcomed Rand with open arms and he immediately became a member of our family. I cannot describe the depth of love he showered on my family over the many years. My parents will miss Rand whom they thought of as one of their sons, my children will miss their Uncle Rand and I will forever miss my “brother”. We loved Rand immensely and the memories of our times together will remain with us forever.

May Rand forever be at rest in the arms of God.

We will always remember how Rand would call his parents daily to visit with them and the flowers he sent to his mother on Valentines Day. Small things that represented what a great man he truly was.

I am so sad to hear the news of Rand's death. It is said by Tibetan Buddhists that no one knows the time of death so we should live each day fully, but clearly Rand died far too young for someone with as much spirit as he had. Thanks, Rand, for being both a personal and business friend during the past 25 years.

Like so many others, I was deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Rand's passing. I was privileged to have worked for Solgar Co. and Rand as their territory sales representative in South Florida from 1994-1995 and but for Rand's generosity in granting me the opportunity to have worked as a territory rep, my career in this industry would never have availed itself of the opportunities that have since transpired.

I deeply regret that I didn't get to know Rand better as a person but in my few and as it now sadly turns out, precious times we did get to work together and know each other, I came away that this was a man of considerable ambition and a great humanity. This is evidenced by his philanthropic endeavors and dedication to others less fortunate.

My deepest prayers and condolensces to Tarrance, Connie and Allen. May Rand's soul forever be at peace and tranquility.

Rand will always have a special place in my heart. His tireless work for Bailey House is the epitome of a dedicated volunteer. As one of our longest standing Board members, he cared about our work and nutured us through his generosity. He was always ready to help keep formerly homeless men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS housed and safe.

Dear Skolnick Family,

I only had a pleasure of working under Rand's leadership for just over a year. During that time I've admired and respected a leader who is honest, sincere and believes in what he does. I'm privilege to know Rand and contribute to his cause in the short time we met. I'll miss him dearly and may he rest in peace.
I extend my deepest condolences to all the family and friends.
Sincerely,

An inspirational leader, Rand's energy and enthusiasm will be sorely missed.
I am proud to have worked for Solgar UK for the past 5 years, and have witnessed first-hand the respect and devotion of all who were privileged to work with and/or for him. My thoughts are with his friends and loved ones at this time.

Rand was a very close and dear friend, who my partner Jack Clark and myself and we have known since the late eighties. Of course, we knew Rand with Michael Deboyn and although my last conversation with Rand mentioned Terrance, we never got to meet him. Rand was a very dear and warm, generous man with so much to offer, not only his friends and family, but the entire world. It is with great sadness I find myself writting in a guest book of someone I thought would live forever. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and all his loved ones, for he had many. God bless you, dear friend.

Since working for Solgar in Ireland, I have had the 'essence of Rand' and the greatness that he stood for with me in my work. I had the pleasure of meeting him in October, and found him to be every bit the person people suggested he was. There was always a buzz in the air of wonderment, excitement when he was spoken of. I am quite fond of that energy, and of the ethics he instilled. My condolences to his family, friends and collegues during this difficult time.

Rand was a wonderful man. He always had a great and positive presence. I never saw him mad or angry. He truly did make a connection with every employee at Solgar. Rand, may God's blessings be with you and your family. You will never be forgotten.

Rand was my best friend for many years. I always called him pumpkin.

Rand was the most optimist man I known; a very happy person, always looked at the bright side of everything; everyday; every week; every month; every year, because Rand never changed with time or good fortune. If any change happened, it was only for better.

What a brilliant businessman and philanthropy. It was an honor and a pleasure to have learned so much from Rand, what a fantastic years, what an incredible good times and so many but so many endless smiles and hugs. Rand was very special in every single way.

No one I have met with the ability to connect with other humans like Rand had. It was Rand who taught me how important was to hug and to communicate with other.

I met Rand in Miami, in those years Rand was not as busy as he always was. Those were the years after Solgar was sold. Rand was putting a tremendous amount of time with some local and worldwide charities entities. His main goal was to help and guide those who needed the most, specially homeless with HIV/AIDS and children.

Rand made this world a better place each and every year for many people. Rand was the real deal and the person who always made the difference with his innate leadership and hugs. Rand generosity and compassion were of absolutely astronomical dimension. it was intrinsic to him.

I always remember the first time we were driving together and Rand saw an old lady walking with some bags in her hands under the intense heat of the sun of Miami Beach. Rand pulled over his Escalade and offered a ride to her destination; it took him a few moments to gain her trust but finally she accepted and we drove her to her place, right at that moment; I clearly understood that Rand was an exceptional and very special man.

Rand was a tireless sleepless fighter for those causes he believed in. As peaceful and friendly like not other person.

Rand loves for his family was limitless, of his father Allen, Rand talked as the best father any man can have, from whom he learned everything good he knew. Of his mother Connie, Rand said only the most beautiful words any man can say about his mother.
To Connie and Allen my deepest and most sincere sympathy in this hard moment and a big hug from Lazaro. I always think of you both with tremendous deal of love and respect.

Rand.
Thank you for being so full of love and allowing us to ride your love train.
You did it with style and grace.
thanks for the company
thanks for so many memories
and thank you for your contribution and legacy.
I am here to say the honor was all mine.

I am going to miss you so much pumpkin

The very sad realization of Rand's passing is just starting to sink in. The service held today in Rand's honor was so beautiful and so filled with love and respect for the wonderful person that he was.
Rand was always larger than life for my husband Rob and myself. There was no one else like him. Always quick with a smile and a complement he never held back his affection.
On and off for the past 10 years Rob has worked for Rand on various yacht adventures. Rand loved his boats and being on the water. But his real joy was in sharing them with his many friends.
Rand dodged many bullets in his life.
We held our breath hoping that he would make it to the next round. One more chance.
Although Rand never got that chance, he has, in his passing, given us ours.
A chance to make a difference. A chance to change the world. A chance to be great. Just like Rand.

Love and Peace

I was so fortunate to know Rand - and particularily to hear of the stimulating details from him of his many "future" plans. Always a true visionary and a passionate dreamer, Rand moreover was also a benevolent leader and the consummate doer as well; indeed, he was the virtual embodiment of a modern, loving "can do" man. He and his presence will be sorely missed. My heartfelt condolences to Terrence, to the entire Skolnick family, as well as to Rand's many, many other caring admirers.
