Ray Mackey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 26, 2014.
MACKEY
Ray Walton Mackey, 86, passed away February 23, 2014. As a man of patience, wisdom and passion, he set high standards in the field of pediatric neurology in Tennessee and Texas during his career. He was an extremely compassionate physician, clinician and scholar who assisted children and their families through challenging and incurable lifelong diseases.
Ray was born on Oct. 27, 1927 in Highland Co., Virginia, to David Nelson Mackey and Fanny Armstrong. He is pre-deceased by his six siblings. Growing up in the rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, he developed a lifelong love for horses.
Ray was valedictorian at Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, VA in May 1945. At the end of WWII, he served with the 10th Mountain Division in Fort Carson, CO. where he learned to ski; a skill and love that he shared with all his children.
Ray completed his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University in 1947. He received his medical degree at the University of Rochester in New York and was then accepted for a pediatric neurology residency at the University of Chicago.
Upon completion of his training, the family relocated to Memphis, where Ray accepted a faculty position at the University of Tennessee in 1959. Ray was later recruited as Chief of Pediatric Neurology at the newly established University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1968. Among other appointments, he initiated epilepsy outreach clinics for UT in Central and South Texas and was on the Professional Advisory Committee for San Antonio Epilepsy Association. His academic career included his love of teaching house staff, and he was considered to be an extraordinary diagnostician.
Beyond his professional life, Ray's greatest devotion was to his wife of 56 years, who predeceased him in 2008, and their eight children. He married Helen Bernice Breidenbach in September of 1951 after meeting her at a summer camp in Wisconsin where she was the nurse and he attended the horses. He enjoyed family life whether it was cooking, gardening, sailing, camping and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His personal interests included being an avid reader and horseman.
Ray is survived by his children: Mary, Tim, Claudia, David, Jane, Katherine, Jonathan and Thomas, as well as eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The family deeply appreciates the care provided by his physicians at UTHSCSA and CTRC, including Sandra Sanchez-Reilly, Anand Karnad, Timothy Tseng. Also, he received outstanding care from Amedisys Hospice and Helping our Seniors.
Friends are invited to a Memorial Mass on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 from 10:00-11:00am, followed by a family visitation from 11:00 to 1:00pm at the Parish Hall at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 8500 Cross Mountain Trail, San Antonio, TX 78255, www.seaschurch.com. I believe Ray was Henry's best friend ever. They worked with the horses together, they were in an accident together, they took the Model T to Baltimore and had many other adventures. Ray gave his half of the Model T to Henry. They both put up with me. Now sadly, both are gone. Henry passed October 29th, 2020. Thinking of you all.

I first met Ray and Helen in June of 2005. Both of them are remembered dearly. I only wished they were around longer. But life is such. May the Mackey family be comforted and may Ray be reunited with Helen at the table of the good Lord.

To Dr. Mackey's family and friends, my deepest sympathies. Dr. Mackey was a significant contributor in the founding organization that is known today as the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas. His passion and compassion for people and families struggling with epilepsy are the pillars of our principles. He was such a kind and gentle person who was so genuine and giving to others. Thank you Dr. Mackey for all you did for our community. Bless you.

I was a rental housemate with Ray for 2 years during our
medical school at University of Rochester. He was scholarly
with a great sense of humor. My wife, Anne, and I enjoyed time with him during several reunions including one at San Antonio.

I was Dr. Mackey's secretary for a short time in the seventies when he was head of Pediatric Neurology at UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. He was the nicest man I've ever met.

Dr. Mackey made a lasting impression on me when he assisted on a legal case at least 18 years ago. His vast knowledge and experience helped to solve the puzzle of what caused a tragic neurological outcome for a very young patient and Dr. Mackey was able to explain the complicated medical terms and diagnosis in a manner that any lay person could easily understand. He was the most impressive expert witness I have ever presented to a court. Through small talk made during the relatively short time we worked together on a single case, perhaps 8 months or a year, I was struck by his obvious and deep love for his family. My deepest condolences for your loss.

Ray was my friend through he being a cousin of my brother-in-law (Fred Botkin) of Churchville, VA. I knew his family while living in Virginia. He moved to San Antonio,TX shortly after we moved here in 1965. We spent several times with his family including great meals together. When my grandson, Jason was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in mid 1985, I called Ray and he told me everything about this disease. He also offered to sit down with my daughter and son-in-law and talk with them.

Ray was a great friend to everyone and a great doctor. He will be MISSED.

LOVE & GOD BLESS!

Jonathan, Mackey Family,

I met Ray Mackey only on one occasion when Jon and his parents visited in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. I remember being struck by how strength and compassion met so comfortably in Ray Mackey.

I will remember Ray at the table of the Lord tomorrow morning. May his soul rest in the peace of God's kingdom; may his family know comfort and assurance of God's love.
